On Easter morning, April 15th, 1979, at 7:19:43, exactly 45 years ago, the Dubrovnik area was hit by the strongest earthquake in recent history. The epicenter of the earthquake was a magnitude 6.9 off the coast of Montenegro, about 100 kms from Dubrovnik.
On that occasion, the “Law on the Reconstruction of Dubrovnik” was adopted, and the Reconstruction Institute was established, which still oversees the process today. During the reconstruction, archaeological research was conducted, with those within and near the Cathedral proving to be exceptionally important in understanding the city's earliest history.
