Ever sat through a wine tasting and nodded along, pretending you knew what everyone was talking about? 🍷🇭🇷

Here’s your cheat sheet for some of the Croatian wine words you’re most likely to hear in a tasting room on Korčula and how to say them.

🍷 Živjeli (ZHEEV-yeh-lee) – The Croatian way to say “Cheers!”, directly translates to “Live!” You’ll hear this before the first sip.

🍷 Bijelo vino (BEE-yeh-lo VEE-no) – White wine. Perfect for ordering in a restaurant or asking what you’re about to taste.

🍷 Crno vino (TSER-no VEE-no) – Red wine. The red wine equivalent you’ll hear everywhere from konobas to wineries.

🍷 Suho (SOO-ho) – Dry. If you usually enjoy Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, this is probably the word you’re looking for.

🍷 Polusuho (POH-loo-SOO-ho) – Off-dry. A little softer than dry, with just a touch of residual sweetness.

🍷 Slatko (SLAHT-ko) – Sweet. Usually used for dessert wines or sweeter wine styles.

🍷 Kiselina (kee-seh-LEE-na) – Acidity. One of the most misunderstood wine terms. High acidity doesn’t mean the wine is “bad”. It gives wine freshness, balance and makes it fantastic with food.

🍷 Voćno (VOCH-no) – Fruity. Expect aromas of peach, citrus, berries or ripe orchard fruit.

🍷 Cvjetno (TSVYET-no) – Floral. Think elderflower, chamomile, orange blossom or jasmine. You’ll often hear this when tasting aromatic white wines like Pošip.

🍷 Mineralno (mee-neh-RAHL-no) – Mineral. It doesn’t mean the wine tastes like rocks! It’s used to describe crisp, saline or flinty characteristics, especially in wines grown near the sea or on limestone soils.

🍷 Još jednu čašu? (YOSH YED-noo CHAH-shoo?) – “One more glass?” Arguably the most important on the list.

Things people get wrong about Korčula 👇

❌“It’s a day trip from Dubrovnik.”
Could it be? Sure. But should it be? Not if you actually want to experience the island.

Korčula isn’t a quick photo stop. It’s vineyard roads through Lumbarda, slow seafood lunches in Žrnovo, swimming in hidden bays, wandering the old town after the day trippers leave, local wine at golden hour, and tiny inland villages most visitors never even hear about.

If you only come for a few hours, you’re seeing the postcard, not the island.

❌“You need a car.”
Not necessarily.

Korčula Town is extremely walkable, and if you’re staying nearby, you can get surprisingly far without one. Taxis exist, water taxis in summer are useful, bikes are popular, and if your goal is wine tasting, a car is actually the worst idea.

We spend half our lives explaining why nobody should be designated-driving through Pošip country.

❌ “You have to like wine.”
This one makes us laugh.

Yes, we’re Korčula Wine Tours. But some of our favourite guests are the ones who come for the island, not the wine.

Maybe one person in your group loves wine and the others care more about viewpoints, local food, history, hidden beaches, olive oil, or just being shown around by people who actually live here.

We love a group with variety.

We can tailor experiences around families, non-drinkers, food lovers, curious travellers, and people who just want a really good day without figuring out logistics.

A few more local truths while we’re here:
✨Korčula Town before 10am and after 6pm feels like a different place
✨Pupnat and Čara deserve way more attention than they get
✨Some of the best swimming is nowhere near the obvious beaches

KorÄŤula is one of those places that gets better the more local your recommendations are.

Follow us if you want less generic Croatia advice and more actual KorÄŤula tips from people who live here

Slow scenes from KorÄŤula that would heal my nervous system right now.

A few favourite viewpoints that take all your worries away:
📍 Lumbarda viewpoints — endless vineyards rolling toward the sea, with the Pelješac mountains in the distance
📍 Pupnat / Pupnatska Luka road — one of the most jaw-dropping drives on the island
📍 Račišće side viewpoints — wild coastline, fewer crowds, unreal Adriatic blues
📍 Korčula Old Town walls — classic, but always worth it
📍 Žrnovo countryside — inland Korčula at its best, all stone villages, olive groves, and vineyard views

If you’re planning a trip and looking for the best viewpoints in Korčula, hidden places on Korčula Island, or a private Korčula sightseeing and wine tour, save this for later.

Pošip AKA the golden child of Croatian wines

Born right here on Korčula, Pošip was Croatia’s first protected white wine and remains one of the country’s most celebrated indigenous varieties. Thanks to the island’s intense Mediterranean sun, limestone-rich soils, and cooling Adriatic breezes, it develops a depth you don’t always expect from a coastal white.

Notes of ripe stone fruit, citrus, wild Mediterranean herbs with a fuller body and a crisp finish.

What’s your favourite Pošip? Let us know in the comments below!

You won’t care how much money you made, but you will remember experiences like this.

On KorÄŤula, these moments are a dime a dozen.

Laughing with your favourite people around the table at an award winning winery
Wandering through old town alleys
Catching the sunset from the ancient walls
Vineyards that stretch out to the sea

Go ahead and book the trip.

Add this to your list of underrated European coastal towns.

Except KorÄŤula has medieval walls, lookout towers, narrow stone streets that open up to the sea, and indescribable golden evening light.

You’ll spend your time getting lost, stopping for a glass of local wine, and finding little swimming spots just steps from town.

Save this for your Croatia itinerary 🇭🇷
