"Protected Forests and Responsible Tourism: The Čikat Sustainability Model"
Since 2016, a forest management initiative has been implemented within the protected Čikat forest area on the island of Lošinj. The aim of the project is to enhance the safety of visitors and staff by managing forest resources sustainably while preserving the natural values of a forest that has, since the 19th century, played a key role in the island's microclimate and identity. The project is based on a professional assessment of the health and structural stability of more than 5,000 trees, most of which are 130-year-old Aleppo pines. Using VTA, SIA, and TRAQ methods, the trees were mapped and categorised, with clear recommendations for removal, pruning, or replanting. Particular emphasis is placed on guest involvement through the "Adopt a Tree" campaign, educational materials, and community planting events.
