Ako želiš doživjeti Istru kakva je nekad bila – iskrena, kamena i puna priča, Muzej u Mošćenicama je mjesto koje ne smiješ zaobići.

Smješten unutar starih zidina, muzej nije samo zbirka predmeta, nego tiha kronika života – ribara, težaka, žena koje su nosile vodu uzbrdo i djece koja su odrastala između mora i planine. Every Easter Sunday, the charming hilltop village of Mošćenice in Croatia comes alive with one of its most beloved local traditions: Picanje Jaja — a lively and unusual Easter egg competition that draws locals and visitors alike from all over Europe. 

This playful ritual, deeply rooted in the community’s festive spirit, is more than just a game — it’s a celebration of heritage, skill, and camaraderie. At 12:00 noon on Easter, participants gather in the historic heart of Mošćenice to compete in this remarkable contest. The aim is deceptively simple: from a distance of roughly 2.8 to 3 metres, competitors attempt to strike a boiled Easter egg with a 1-euro coin so that the coin becomes embedded in the egg’s shell — a rare feat that requires precision, patience, and a steady hand. 

Traditionally, before the first throw, each contestant takes a ceremonial sip of w**e — a small ritual that adds to the festive atmosphere and sense of community fun.  What began decades ago as a simple village pastime has now evolved into a celebrated event — often referred to locally as the “World Championship in Picanje Jaja” — welcoming hundreds of participants, from children to adults, and even international visitors. 

But Picanje Jaja isn’t just about the competition. The event is part of a larger Easter celebration in Mošćenice that includes traditional foods like fritule (sweet fried pastries), local w**e and medica (honey-based liqueur), beautifully decorated eggs, and a joyful atmosphere of hospitality and cultural pride. Spectators stroll through the medieval streets, enjoy food and drink stalls, and share in the warmth of this centuries-old tradition that spans generations.
