According to data from Eurostat, only 1.4% of residents reported crime, violence, or vandalism in their neighborhood, which is the lowest of any member state, and far below the EU average of 10%.
Croatia is also rated as:
- The 19th safest country in the world (out of 163) on the 2025 Global Peace Index
- No. 1 in Europe for feeling safe walking alone at night, according to Numbeo's perception data
In Croatia, you can be carefree while your kids walk to school on their own, when you come home from a late night out, when you leave your phone on the towel while swimming in the sea, and when you leave the doors unlocked in small villages in Slavonia.
Still, pickpocketing is something to be aware of, especially in the busiest tourist crowds. The same common-sense rules apply as they would for any big European city.
Despite that, Croatia might just bring you a sense of safety and exhilaration you didn't know existed.
