Carry your passport overseas or keep it locked in your room safe? 🤔🛂 My family was just debating this question on our recent European cruise. Rick Steves has some great answers!

When you're traveling in Europe, should you keep your passport on you?

It's the smartest and safest thing to do. Certainly keep it close whenever you're traveling between destinations — you'll need it any time you fly, enter or exit the Schengen zone (like taking the Eurostar from Paris to London), and often when you check into a hotel. Meanwhile, some European countries technically require you to be able to present official ID at any time...which, for an American traveler, means their passport.

If you do carry it with you, keep it in a secure location on your body like a moneybelt or neck wallet. Don't put it with things you reach for often — the last thing you want is it falling out as you pull out your guidebook or wallet — and never in an easy-to-pickpocket spot like a jacket pocket or the outer sleeve of your backpack.

Some travelers prefer to leave their passport in their hotel room. If you do this, lock it in a safe (if possible) and be sure to carry a photocopy or save a picture on your phone. This is smart regardless, as there are times when you'll want your passport info while out sightseeing — such as getting an age-based discount at the museum, or processing a VAT refund for that sweater you bought. Plus, if it gets stolen, it's much easier to replace if you have a copy already.

A few more visual hints about tomorrow's post. Any guesses? These ruins have seen Romans, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottomans come and go. They're an easy cruise excursion from a port that's often overshadowed by its famous neighbors.
