Velika Gospa or the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is also a national holiday, which is celebrated on August 15, when all over Croatia the faithful make a pilgrimage to Marian shrines. On this day, Catholic believers remember the dogma of their faith.

Croatia has a long-standing tradition of worshiping the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Croatian people survived all the wars, famines, troubles, attacks sheltered under the protective cloak of the Mother of God. This is evidenced by numerous churches, monasteries, prayers and songs dedicated to Our Lady since the earliest days of Croatian history. Trusting in her heavenly intercession, they honored her as the "Queen of the Croats" out of gratitude, and called her "fidelissima advocata Croatiae" (the most faithful lawyer of the Croats).

The connection between Croats and the Virgin Mary is also evident in the greeting "Praised Jesus and Mary". Namely, the Croats added his mother Maria to the Christian greeting "Praise be to Jesus Christ". 1,162 religious buildings and eight cathedrals in Croatia are dedicated to Mary in honor and glory.
