Guardian readers selected Cres as the winning tip in a feature on Europe’s favourite “unsung” islands, ahead of recommendations from across Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Ireland.

The appeal wasn’t a famous beach club or a headline attraction.

It was the opposite.

Rugged landscapes, olive groves, small coastal settlements, clear Adriatic water — and griffon vultures gliding above the island. Their wingspan can reach 2.8 metres, and the Cres population is remarkable for nesting on cliffs directly above the sea.

After the movement, the wake and the sound of cruising, there is that moment when everything suddenly goes quiet.

𝗥𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶’𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝘆-𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.

Around 330 km of traditional dry-stone walls, known locally as suhozid, run across the Kornati islands, many stretching from one coast of an island to the other.

No mortar. No concrete. The walls were built from local stone, carefully stacked by hand so that the stones themselves provide the strength.

According to the traditional building pace recorded in Kornati, two experienced builders can construct around 2 km in 150–200 days. At that pace, recreating the entire network would take 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝟳𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝟵𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀.

For generations, these walls divided pastures, marked land and shaped one of the Adriatic’s most distinctive landscapes.

From the sea, they look almost effortless. 🌊
