Ivan Meštrović created sculptures depicting elderly people. He did not make fun of old age, but carefully shaped bodies of different ages to show the aging process. . He shaped the young body so that it appears smooth, full of beautiful curves. On the other hand, when he depicted elderly people, the bodies were thin, flabby, wrinkled.
Over time, the body becomes different through a natural process, which is inevitable, for every human being. Meštrović did not want to hide the changes, and we call such a direction in art naturalism. These two sculptures are a message about the passage of time and change.
The sculptor's gallery in Split is one of my favourite spots in the city.
