Plitvice Lakes National Park is a forest reserve in central Croatia, home to 16 crystalline lakes that tumble into each other through a series of cascades and waterfalls. Visitors choosing to explore all the lakes, connected by wooden walkways and bridges, can expect to 6-8 hours of walking time. The park was founded in 1949. Three decades later, in 1979, the park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register. The park is situated in the mountainous Karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is visited by over a million people per year.
