Here is the part nobody tells you. September on the Adriatic beats August. The sea has had all summer to warm up, the towns get their breathing room back, and you can walk into a restaurant at eight with no booking. If you are flying in from the States or Australia you are crossing an ocean either way, so you may as well pick the better month.

A morning on the Adriatic does not ask much of you. Espresso first. Figs from the market, eaten before they go soft. Olive oil on everything, including things you would not think of. Sunglasses, because the light coming off that water is serious. And a book you will get through maybe four pages of before you fall asleep on deck.

Those letters on the side of a hull are not decoration. That is the Plimsoll line, and it tells the crew how deep the ship is allowed to sit in the water.

TF, F, T, S, W, WNA. Tropical fresh, fresh, tropical, summer, winter, winter North Atlantic. Water density shifts with temperature and salt, so a ship floats differently in the Adriatic in August than it does in the North Atlantic in January.

Samuel Plimsoll fought to get this into British law in 1876 and it has been keeping crews alive ever since.

Homo Volans. The Flying Man. That is what Faust Vrančić called his drawing of a man coming down under a square parachute, sketched centuries before anyone built one that actually worked. He was born in Šibenik in 1551. He also published a dictionary of five European languages and designed 56 machines, from bridges to mills run on wind and water.

The coastline sells itself. Show anyone a photo of Hvar and they are already looking at flights. What does not photograph well is the crew, which is exactly what Scout wanted to talk about. That is the part small cruise gets right. A handful of people who know your coffee order by day two and remember your name for years.

No airport transfers, no hotel check ins, no hauling a bag down a cobbled street at midnight looking for a lockbox. You wake up, the view out your window has changed overnight, and somebody has already made the coffee.

Oysters growing on ropes in Mali Ston Bay. Fresh water pushes down out of the karst and meets the salt water here, and for reasons of chemistry we will not pretend to fully understand, oysters love it. People have been farming them in this bay since Roman times. You eat them within about an hour of them leaving the water, with lemon and nothing else. No sauce. Do not ask for sauce.
