Most people come to Croatia looking for the sea. Velebit reminds you how wild the country can be.

The view most travelers drive past

Most visitors come to Vrana for the lake. Few climb high enough to see it from above.

Follow the path up toward Kamenjak and the landscape begins to change. Below you, Vransko Lake stretches between the mountains and the Adriatic, while the islands of the Kornati appear on the horizon on clear days. The fields, wetlands and coastline unfold into one enormous Dalmatian panorama.

There are no crowded promenades here. No rows of beach chairs. Just stone, wind and one of the best viewpoints in the region.

Kamenjak is a reminder that some of Croatia's most memorable views aren't found at sea level.

Fortress Above the Sea: St. Michael's Fortress, Šibenik

High above the red rooftops of Šibenik's old town, a medieval fortress watches over the Adriatic.

St. Michael's Fortress (Tvrđava sv. Mihovila) is the oldest of Šibenik's four fortresses, built on a hill that has held some form of defensive structure since prehistoric times. Its thick stone walls once protected the city from Ottoman and Venetian incursions; today, they enclose one of the most striking open-air venues on the Croatian coast.

Climb the winding stairways of Šibenik's old town - a maze of stone streets narrower and quieter than Split or Dubrovnik - and emerge onto the fortress ramparts to a sweeping panorama: the city's terracotta roofs, the cathedral of St. James, and the Adriatic scattered with islands stretching to the horizon.

In summer, the fortress transforms into an open-air stage, hosting concerts and performances against a backdrop of sea and sky. Fans of a certain fantasy series may also recognize its walls from a season of location filming, though its history stretches back many centuries further.

Šibenik itself is often overlooked between the bigger coastal cities, but its cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site built entirely of stone, without mortar or wood) and this fortress make it one of Dalmatia's most rewarding stops.

Just beyond Split lies the birthplace of the city's story.

Once the capital of Roman Dalmatia, ancient Salona was a thriving city long before Diocletian built his famous palace. At its height, tens of thousands of people lived within its walls, making it one of the most important centers on the Adriatic coast.
Today, visitors can wander through the remains of amphitheaters, basilicas, city gates, and early Christian sites, imagining life in a city that shaped the region's history for centuries.

Salona's connection to Split runs deep. After the city's destruction in the 7th century, many of its residents sought refuge within Diocletian's Palace, laying the foundations of modern-day Split.

Surrounded by olive groves and open landscapes, Salona remains one of Croatia's most fascinating yet overlooked archaeological treasures — a place where ancient history feels remarkably close.

Croatia's Living Village Museum: Kumrovec, Zagorje

Just north of Zagreb, time slows to the rhythm of the 19th century.

Kumrovec is an open-air ethno-village in the rolling hills of Hrvatsko Zagorje, where wooden and stone cottages have been preserved exactly as they stood over a hundred years ago. It's best known as the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito, but the village's real charm lies in its everyday details, creaking wooden looms, hand-forged tools, smoke rising from outdoor bread ovens, and farmyards still tended the old way.

Walk the narrow dirt lanes between thatched-roof houses, and you'll find craftsmen demonstrating pottery, blacksmithing, and traditional weaving, much as their great-grandparents once did. Farm animals wander freely between the cottages, and the smell of fresh bread and grah baked in a wood-fired peć often drifts through the village square.

Kumrovec is at its liveliest during folk festivals and harvest celebrations, when locals in traditional Zagorje dress perform old songs and dances passed down through generations.

Surrounded by vineyard-covered hills and quiet countryside, Kumrovec offers a side of Croatia far from the coast - slower, greener, and rooted in a way of life that has almost disappeared elsewhere.

💚 Croatia's Wild Emerald River: Mrežnica

No entrance fee. No tour buses. Just crystal-clear green water tumbling over travertine waterfalls, one after another.

The Mrežnica River is one of Croatia's best-kept secrets - a 65-kilometre stretch of emerald pools, natural slides, and cascades cutting through dense forest. While the crowds flock to Plitvice, locals have been coming here for decades to swim, kayak, and camp by the water. Every bend in the river reveals something new: a hidden waterfall, a wooden bridge, a rope swing hanging over a perfect pool.

No infrastructure, no crowds. Just the river.

🫒 Olive Groves Older Than Christianity: Lun, Pag Island

Some of these trees were already old when the Roman Empire fell.

In the village of Lun on the northern tip of Pag Island, wild olive trees grow that are almost 2000 years old - gnarled, twisted giants with trunks wider than a car, still producing fruit after all this time. The protected grove feels more like a living museum than a landscape, a place where you walk among something genuinely ancient and almost impossible to comprehend.

Pag is famous for its cheese and its parties. But Lun is its quiet soul, windswept, rocky, and unlike anything else in Croatia.

Istrian Hilltop: Rovinj's Hidden Backstreets

Everyone photographs the Rovinj harbour. Few ever get lost behind it.

Climb up through the old town, past the laundry lines strung between terracotta buildings, past the cats sleeping on sun-warmed stone steps, past doorways that open onto unexpected courtyards, and you'll find a medieval hilltop town that feels completely untouched by the tourist trail below. At the very top, the Church of St. Euphemia watches over the entire Istrian coast, its bell tower visible from the sea for miles.

Rovinj is one of those rare places that rewards the curious. The postcard view is beautiful. What's behind it is unforgettable.

⚔️ Croatia's Oldest Medieval Festival: Rabska Fjera, Rab

Every year at the end of July, an entire town travels back to 1364.
Rapska Fjera is the oldest and largest medieval summer festival in Croatia, rooted in a tradition that began on 21 July 1364, when the Rab Town Council decided to pay tribute to King Louis the Great, who freed Rab from Venetian rule.

For three days, the ancient stone streets of Rab's old town is filled with over 700 costumed residents - knights, noblewomen, craftsmen, merchants, jugglers. Artisan stores move to the streets so you can have a belt or perfumed pomade made in front of your eyes, while your hair is braided with tiny flowers in a typical medieval style. Freshly fried šulčići are served while an entire fishermen's village is built at the beach with traditional tools and machines.

The festival culminates on St. Christopher's Day, 27 July, with the famous crossbow competition of the Rab Crossbowmen, followed by fireworks and a closing concert.

Rab's old town is one of the best-preserved medieval townscapes on the Adriatic, four bell towers, Romanesque churches, and Venetian palaces packed onto a narrow peninsula. The Fjera is the one weekend a year it becomes fully, theatrically alive.
