As we near the end of our food series, we thought we’d share one of our favorite comfort foods: Burek. Caution- this dish has many different names depending on which balkan country you go to, so be prepared to get some weird looks depending on how you call this dish. Burek is a flaky dish often filled with various ingredients (reminiscent of Spanakopita). Our personal favorites are Burek sa Sirom (Burek with Cheese), or Sirnica as it may be called in other countries. It’s other varieties include being filled with meat, spinach, potatoes, zucchini, etc. We personally love pairing this dish with a cold glass of Kefir to dip your burek in, or just drink by itself!

Croatia has been described as “the Shangri-La for wine geeks”, so of course, we had to include it in our food series! What makes it so special you ask? The unique vineyard locations and the fact that most vineyards are able to be harvested year round. It’s not uncommon to find vineyards growing along the coast or on a hillside. Fun fact: the island of Hvar is home to the longest continually harvested vineyard in the world!

The diverse vineyard locations. It’s not uncommon to find vineyards along the coastline or along the hillside in Croatia. Back to our regularly scheduled program, highlighting foods across Croatia! As you start to reach the coast of Croatia, you’ll find that many of the dishes in local restaurants have a subtle Italian influence and incorporate lots of seafood. Some dishes you may find that incorporate some of Croatia’s seafood? Skampi na buzaru (shrimp in red tomato wine), Brudet (a Croatian seafood stew), or Dagnje na buzaru (Mussels stew)!
