111 years ago today, Alma pl. Balley became the first woman in Zagreb—and in all of Croatia—to earn a driver’s license. At a time when driving was considered inappropriate for women, she challenged the norm, took the test, and passed on her first try. She became the 285th licensed driver in the country, driving an Opel with a top speed of 60 km/h. From the passenger seat to the driver’s seat—she made history.

The past few months have been a whirlwind — letting go of longtime collaborations, navigating uncertainty, and finding a new home for my cooking workshops. It hasn’t been easy, but today, as we held our very first štrukli workshop in this new space, my heart felt full. The view, the energy, the people — it all reminded me why I started this journey in the first place. Can’t wait to share this new chapter with you. See you soon!

What makes Croatia special is not just our sports achievements, but the way we celebrate them. We’re the only country in the world that currently holds a world title in water polo, a silver medal in handball, and a bronze in football. A small nation of 3.8 million people with big dreams - and even bigger heart! ❤️🇭🇷

Nestled in the heart of Zagreb’s main square lies the Manduševac Fountain, a site steeped in legend and believed to hold the story behind the naming of Croatia’s capital.

According to folklore, a long time ago, a severe drought gripped the region, leaving its people desperate for water. A weary knight, returning from battle, paused at a spring to quench his thirst. Spotting a young maiden named Manda nearby, he called out, "Manda, zagrabi!"—which translates to "Manda, scoop it!" in Croatian.

In honor of this event, the spring was named Manduševac, and the town that grew around it was called Zagreb, inspired by the knight’s cry to "zagrabi."

Today, Manduševac Fountain stands as a cherished symbol of Zagreb, weaving together myth and history to enrich the city’s identity.

Step into history with Zagreb's enchanting gas lanterns! First lit on October 31, 1863, these iconic lamps are unlike any others in the world, thanks to dedicated lamplighters who still light them by hand each evening and extinguish them at dawn.

In the winter, these 246 lanterns start glowing around 2 p.m., casting their magic until 7 a.m., while in summer they brighten the streets from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. Once numbering nearly 2,000 across the city, only the lamps in the Upper Town, Kaptol, and Opatovina remain, preserved as cultural heritage since the 1990s.

Catch a glimpse of tradition, romance, and old-world charm every night in the heart of Zagreb!

Happy International Tie Day! Did you know the tie originated in Croatia? 🇭🇷 Back in the 17th century, when soldiers went off to war, their loved ones would tie scarves around their necks as a reminder to stay close to their hearts. 💕

Today, statues of iconic historical figures in Zagreb are dressed up with ties, celebrating this timeless fashion accessory that’s now a staple in men’s style worldwide. 👔

Food has a special way of bringing people together, and štrukli are the perfect example—especially in the fall when we all crave something warm and comforting. There’s no better way to experience the heart of a place than through its local dishes. I’m so glad that my guests from Nevada and Michigan, USA, loved this classic Croatian comfort food, a dish that stirs up nostalgia while creating new memories.

Zagreb families take great pride in their family recipes, carefully passing them down through generations. One such recipe is this semolina pie with a shortcrust pastry. Unlike most pies, where the dough is rolled out, in this one, the dough is grated, resulting in a delightful crispiness after baking. It's a perfect choice for Sunday lunch, and today, my guests from Melbourne had the pleasure of preparing it.
