A while back, Mr. W. from the USA joined my štrukli cooking class. He called it outstanding (his words, not mine!) and, before he left, asked if I could share my contact details. He said he wanted to send me something “a little bit silly.”

Fast forward a month, and a mysterious package arrives at my door. Inside? A charming wooden squirrel — inspired by the classic cartoon Rocky and Bullwinkle — that Mr. W. had carved by hand. As it turns out, it’s the perfect little gadget for safely pushing in and pulling the oven rack out.

It made me smile from ear to ear. Such a thoughtful, quirky gift — and a beautiful reminder that small connections can turn into moments of pure joy. ❤️😊

In continental Croatia, minced meat dishes are a staple — stuffed peppers in the summer, sarma (sauerkraut rolls) in the winter, and in between, you can’t go wrong with faširanci (minced meat patties). They pair beautifully with a veggie stew, but I love them on their own with a side of potatoes. Today I made a potato salad with lamb’s lettuce and pumpkin seed oil — an absolute winner!

Wine tasting is an essential part of my food tours. With over 120 native grape varieties, Croatia produces around 50 truly unique wines. It’s a heritage meant to be savored — best enjoyed alongside traditional charcuterie.
Cheers! (Or as we say in Croatian: Živjeli!)

One of the best parts of my job is connecting with people from all over the world and learning about their cultures. Today’s table brought together amazing guests from Australia, the USA, and Sweden. Good food, great company, and meaningful conversations – across generations!

I love showing people around our city and introducing them to the rich flavors of Croatian cuisine. Today’s food tour was extra special—a group of guests from the same country, each arriving through different paths, ended up discovering a surprising connection. Halfway through the tour, two of them realized they went to the same high school and shared mutual friends. Moments like these, when strangers become connected in the most unexpected ways, are what make this job so magical.

Some things are just too good not to repeat! This year, for the fourth time, we welcomed a new group of Northeastern University students from Boston to my cooking class, where they experienced the flavors and traditions of Croatian cuisine. On the menu: Cuttlefish black risotto, Soparnik-babica, Chicken žgvacet with fuži, and Apple strudel. We cooked, laughed, shared stories—and of course, ended the day enjoying every bite together.

Learning new skills is always more fun in good company! That’s exactly how it was with the group of food enthusiasts Forks on the Road, who had a blast making štrukli.

111 years ago today, Alma pl. Balley became the first woman in Zagreb—and in all of Croatia—to earn a driver’s license. At a time when driving was considered inappropriate for women, she challenged the norm, took the test, and passed on her first try. She became the 285th licensed driver in the country, driving an Opel with a top speed of 60 km/h. From the passenger seat to the driver’s seat—she made history.

The past few months have been a whirlwind — letting go of longtime collaborations, navigating uncertainty, and finding a new home for my cooking workshops. It hasn’t been easy, but today, as we held our very first štrukli workshop in this new space, my heart felt full. The view, the energy, the people — it all reminded me why I started this journey in the first place. Can’t wait to share this new chapter with you. See you soon!

What makes Croatia special is not just our sports achievements, but the way we celebrate them. We’re the only country in the world that currently holds a world title in water polo, a silver medal in handball, and a bronze in football. A small nation of 3.8 million people with big dreams - and even bigger heart! ❤️🇭🇷
