The imposing building that today houses the cathedral « Notre-Dame de l’Assomption du Cap-Haïtien » was built in 1670, when the city was known as Cap Français.
Parti en fumée twice, in 1691 and in 1695, the church was rebuilt four (4) times in wood before this double reconstruction in masonry.
It was destroyed again by the earthquake of May 7, 1842 and the reconstruction work lasted almost 100 years. However, the church was elevated to the rank of cathedral on October 3, 1861.
The final blessing took place on May 7, 1942 in commemoration of the centenary of the earthquake that destroyed the old parish church.
This wonderful cathedral represents the emblematic building heritage of the city of Cap-Haïtien.
