The imposing building that today houses the cathedral « Notre-Dame de l’Assomption du Cap-Haïtien » was built in 1670, when the city was known as Cap Français.
Parti en fumée twice, in 1691 and in 1695, the church was rebuilt four (4) times in wood before this double reconstruction in masonry.

It was destroyed again by the earthquake of May 7, 1842 and the reconstruction work lasted almost 100 years. However, the church was elevated to the rank of cathedral on October 3, 1861.
The final blessing took place on May 7, 1942 in commemoration of the centenary of the earthquake that destroyed the old parish church.

This wonderful cathedral represents the emblematic building heritage of the city of Cap-Haïtien.

Happy Haitian Independence Day! Haiti celebrates its independence on January 1st, the day in 1804 when the country declared independence from French rule:
Haiti's independence is a significant event in world history:

🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹👌🏿👌🏿 ✊🏿 ✊🏿✊🏿
First Black republic: Haiti was the first Black republic in the world, and the first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery.
Successful slave revolt: The Haitian Revolution was the only successful slave revolt in history that led to the creation of a new nation.
Inspiration for revolutionaries: Haiti's courage and sacrifices inspired future revolutionaries.
Haitians celebrate Independence Day by remembering the stories of their ancestors and the sacrifices made during the revolution. They also celebrate with soup joumou, a traditional pumpkin soup.
