A defeated revolutionary… and a celebrated hero in a new world.

In 1851 Kossuth arrived in New York—and what followed was history in motion: tens of thousands of people, a sea of flags, and roaring cheers. A Hungarian leader welcomed in America as a living symbol of freedom.

Few people can say they were celebrated as heroes on two continents. Kossuth was one of them.

📜 April 8, 1860 – The end of a tragic life

On this day, , known as “the Greatest Hungarian” by , took his own life.

One of the most influential figures of Hungary’s Reform Era, the builder of the Chain Bridge and a minister in the government of , struggled with deep inner conflicts and political tensions. While he supported progress, he feared the consequences of revolution and the possible downfall of the nation.

He spent his final years in a sanatorium in Döbling, still working for Hungary, but constant pressure and threats eventually broke him.

🕯️ His death shocked the nation. His legacy lives on—not only as a politician, but as one of the greatest architects of Hungary’s development.

How different would Béla Bartók’s music be if he had not collected folk songs and had relied only on the classical traditions of his time?

Béla Bartók was one of the most important Hungarian composers, ethnomusicologists, and pianists of the 20th century. During his folk song collections, together with Zoltán Kodály, he recorded thousands of melodies, which had a strong influence on his unique, modern style. His major works include the Concerto for Orchestra, Bluebeard’s Castle, The Miraculous Mandarin, as well as his string quartets and piano pieces. Fleeing fascism, he emigrated to the United States in 1940, where he lived in difficult circumstances and died in 1945.

560 éves szenzáció az Országos Széchényi Könyvtárban!

Az OSZK munkatársai egy rendkívül ritka ősnyomtatvány-töredéket azonosítottak: a 36 soros Biblia egy pergamenlapját. A felfedezést Szovák Márton t***e a régi kötetek katalogizálása során.
A 36 soros Biblia még a híres Gutenberg-bibliánál is ritkább, világszerte mindössze 76 példány ismert. A most előkerült lap Dániel könyvéből tartalmaz részletet, és 1461 előtt nyomtatták Johannes Gutenberg betűivel. Igazi könyvtörténeti kuriózum!

Did you know?
During the Siege of Budapest, the retreating German forces blew up all the bridges across the Danube. The fighting ended on February 13, 1945.
In the years of shortage that followed, materials were salvaged from bridge wrecks and collapsed buildings, while wood came from dismantled Danube bathhouses. This is how the nine-span, semi-permanent Kossuth Bridge was built between today’s Chain Bridge and Margaret Bridge and was there between 1946-1960. After the permanent bridges were rebuilt, it was dismantled, and today memorial plaques mark its former location on both riverbanks.

The Pest ghetto was liberated on January 18, 1945. Due to the inhumane sanitary conditions, many people died; in December 1944, 80–120 deaths occurred daily. As the Red Army approached, the Arrow Cross guards disappeared, and residents used the wooden fence as firewood. At the time of liberation, about three thousand unburied bodies were found in Klauzál Square.

The tragedy of the Hungarian Second Army at the Don River remained a taboo for decades. The disaster occurred on Soviet territory along the Don, where Hungary deployed its troops under political pressure from N**i Germany. Hungarian soldiers defended a “paper-thin” front line with inadequate weapons, poor supplies, and without proper winter equipment.
In January 1943, a well-organized Soviet offensive by the numerically superior Voronezh Front broke through the Hungarian positions. The retreat was not an act of cowardice but a fight for survival in temperatures of minus 30–40 degrees Celsius.
Today, historians largely view the Hungarian soldiers as victims who tried to endure in inhuman conditions. War diaries, uncensored letters, and prisoners-of-war memoirs speak not of military plans, but of everyday survival: frozen horse meat, paper-soled boots, comradeship, and the most basic instinct to stay alive.
