🇭🇺🍫 Hungary's sweetest little identity crisis: Túró Rudi.

Sounds like a culinary misunderstanding? Welcome to Hungary. 😉

Túró Rudi is a refrigerated snack that generations of Hungarians have grown up with, and one that tends to leave foreign visitors somewhere between confusion and obsession.

Inspired by a Soviet-era curd snack, Túró Rudi made its Hungarian debut in 1968. Since then, it has become something of a national institution.

The concept is simple: a sweetened túró (fresh curd cheese) filling wrapped in a thin chocolatey coating. No complicated recipe. No fancy presentation. Just a surprisingly addictive combination of tangy, creamy and sweet. 🍫

The name? Túró is the cheese, while Rudi playfully refers to its little rod-like shape.

And the iconic red polka-dot packaging? Almost as recognizable in Hungary as the snack itself. 🔴

Today, countless flavours and variations exist, but the classic still has a special place in Hungarian hearts.

For visitors, it's a perfect reminder that local culture doesn't always come with a UNESCO label or an admission ticket. Sometimes it costs a few hundred forints and waits patiently in a supermarket fridge. 🛒

Words That Escaped Hungary #3 🇭🇺🐎 HUSZÁR → HUSSAR

Some Hungarian words travelled abroad. This one arrived on horseback. 🐎

Huszár — the light cavalryman who became one of the most recognizable figures of Hungarian military history.

The word has a journey of its own. Its deeper roots are most likely South Slavic, where an earlier form referred to a raider or robber. By the 15th century, however, huszár was being used in Hungary for the fast, lightly armed cavalry associated with the armies of King Matthias Corvinus. ⚔️🇭🇺

And then Europe took notice.

Hungarian-style hussar units became famous for their speed, daring tactics and rather difficult-to-ignore uniforms. Their model was adopted across Europe, and the Hungarian word travelled with them: Husar in German, hussard in French, ussaro in Italian and hussar in English. 🌍

Not bad for a word that started life with considerably less respectable company. 😉

And there’s another Hungarian connection: the hussar’s signature weapon was the szablya — or sabre — the star of our previous episode of this series of posts.

Horse. Sabre. Braided uniform. Plenty of attitude.

Hungary had created a brand before branding was even a thing.

🍇 If there is a time to talk about Tokaj, it is now!

Today marks the beginning of the Tokaj-Hegyalja Harvest Days (2-4th October 2026), one of Hungary’s oldest harvest celebrations — and across the region, one of the most fascinating moments of the w**e year is underway.

Tokaj is not simply about drinking w**e.

This UNESCO-listed cultural landscape is shaped by volcanic soils, centuries-old cellar systems, historic w**e estates and the unique microclimate behind botrytis, or “noble rot” — the rather unglamorous-sounding secret behind one of the world’s most celebrated sweet w**es, Tokaji Aszú.

🕌 Budapest and Hungary has a Turkish side. And no, we don’t mean the kebab shops.

For almost 150 years, large parts of Hungary were under Ottoman rule — a turbulent chapter of our history that also left a fascinating architectural and cultural footprint behind.

In Budapest, you can still experience it firsthand. The beautifully restored Tomb of Gül Baba, an Ottoman dervish and poet, overlooks the Danube from Buda. Below the hills, historic thermal baths such as Rudas preserve their distinctive Ottoman domes and octagonal pools — proof that Budapest’s bathing culture has several layers of history.

And the story extends far beyond the capital.

In Eger, climb the northernmost surviving Ottoman minaret in Hungary, a reminder of the famous 16th-century struggle for the fortress. In Pécs, the former Mosque of Pasha Qasim still dominates Széchenyi Square — today functioning as a Catholic church, with a cross and crescent sharing the same building.

Even Buda Castle carries traces and stories of the Ottoman occupation, from the capture of Buda in 1541 to its recapture in 1686.

🇭🇺 Is it a dog? Is it a mop? No, it’s a Puli.

Welcome to Born and Bred in Hungary, our new series introducing some of the four-legged characters that are just as much part of Hungary’s heritage as paprika, pálinka and arguing about the correct way to make goulash. 😉

First up: the Puli, one of Hungary’s most distinctive shepherd dogs.

Small, remarkably agile and covered in its unmistakable naturally corded coat, the Puli was bred for serious work. For centuries, these intelligent little dynamos helped Hungarian shepherds manage their flocks, particularly across the Great Hungarian Plain. While larger breeds such as the Komondor guarded livestock, the Puli was the one keeping everybody in line.

But somewhere along the way, a working dog became a "cultural icon". A Puli named "Bogáncs" became the hero of István Fekete’s beloved 1957 novel; decades later, a giant Puli sculpture represented Hungarian heritage on Washington’s National Mall during the 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

And then came Silicon Valley. "Beast", Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s white Puli, became a social-media celebrity with millions of followers.

From herding sheep on the Puszta to representing Hungary in Washington and living with the founder of Facebook — not bad for a Hungarian sheepdog. 🇭🇺🐕

🥾 This autumn, follow the Blue.

The temperature is finally dropping, the forests are slowly changing colour, and Hungary is entering perhaps its best hiking season. 🍂🌲

And there is one trail that Hungarians simply call “the Blue” – the National Blue Trail (Országos Kéktúra).

Its roots go back to 1930, with the trail officially inaugurated in 1938. Today, its roughly 1,170 km connect Írott-kő in western Hungary with Hollóháza in the northeast, crossing mountains, forests, villages and some of the country’s most remarkable landscapes. A simple blue stripe on white shows the way. 🔵

But for generations of Hungarians, the Blue Trail has been more than kilometres. The famous checkpoint booklet turns hiking into a lifelong project: collect the stamps section by section, year after year. There is no need to complete it all at once – and that is precisely the beauty of it.

For visitors, the same philosophy creates endless possibilities. 🌿

Goulash vs. Goulash 🥣🔥

One comes in a bowl.

The other comes with a story.

Many visitors to Hungary will try a bowl of goulash during their stay. And rightly so. It's one of the country's most iconic dishes 🇭🇺

Words That Escaped Hungary #2 🇭🇺⚔️ SZABLYA → SABRE

Some Hungarian words travel surprisingly well. This one travelled armed. 😉

The Hungarian szablya describes the curved, single-edged sword that became closely associated with cavalry warfare across Central and Eastern Europe. The word itself has a debated deeper origin, but Hungarian played an important role in carrying it westward: szablya influenced forms such as German Säbel and French sabre, eventually giving English its sabre/saber. ⚔️🌍

And Hungary didn’t exactly abandon the weapon once it became a sport.

Fencing is one of Hungary’s great sporting traditions, and sabre has historically been its strongest discipline. Hungarian men won an extraordinary nine consecutive Olympic individual sabre titles from 1924 to 1964 — with champions including names such as Aladár Gerevich and Pál Kovács. 🥇🇭🇺

So perhaps it’s fitting that we didn’t only help send the word around the world. We became rather good at using it too. 😏

150 years of Budapest’s grandest idea. 🌳🏛️

On 20 August 1876, Budapest opened its brand-new Sugárút to traffic — the avenue we know today as Andrássy Avenue. This year, it turns 150. 🎂

Its creation was urban planning on an ambitious scale. Pest was growing rapidly, overcrowded Király Street needed relief, and the expanding city needed a proper connection between the centre and City Park. Construction began in 1872; just four years later, the new boulevard opened. By 1885, 131 buildings lined its route.

And it was carefully designed to change character along the way. Dense urban palaces and shops lead to lower residential buildings, before the avenue opens into elegant villas and gardens approaching Heroes’ Square. 🏘️🌳

Along those roughly 2.3 kilometres came some serious neighbours: the Hungarian State Opera House, grand Neo-Renaissance palaces, theatres, museums, embassies and eventually Heroes’ Square.

Then Budapest put something under it too. 🚇 In 1896, the Millennium Underground opened beneath Andrássy — the first underground railway in continental Europe.

What began as a solution to traffic became a symbol of Budapest transforming itself into a modern European metropolis. UNESCO agreed: Andrássy Avenue joined Budapest’s World Heritage Site in 2002.

150 years later, we still drive it, walk it, guide it — and keep discovering stories behind those façades.

A Slice of Hungary, 2026 Edition. 🇭🇺🍰 ⭐

Ahead of 20 August — St. Stephen’s Day and the symbolic birthday of Hungary — the country chooses its official Cake of Hungary. This year, for the 20th edition of the competition, a record 60 creations competed for the title.

The winner for 2026 is Bíborfehér — roughly, Crimson & White — created by pastry chefs László Balogh, Zoltán Balogh and Roland Kis of Kézműves Cukrászda in Gyula. And they know how to win: the same team took the title last year too. 🏆🍰

This year’s competition put two very Hungarian ingredients in the spotlight: rögös túró, our distinctive curd cheese, and tejföl, sour cream. Bíborfehér combines them with forest berries, toasted almonds, blackcurrant w**e, chocolate, vanilla, lemon and freeze-dried raspberries. Sweet, tart, creamy, fruity — and considerably more sophisticated than the average birthday cake. 😉

There’s a sugar-free champion too: Szilvafácska (”Little Plum Tree”), inspired by childhood memories of a grandmother’s garden, combining plum, walnut, milk chocolate, cinnamon and green tea. 🌿💜

Both cakes can be tasted from 20 August at the Street of Hungarian Flavours in Budapest and at nearly 500 pastry shops across Hungary.

So if you happen to be in Hungary around our national holiday, there’s one more piece of local culture worth putting on the programme.
