The Hungarian Story Behind the Sound
Have you ever wondered why church bells ring at 12 noon in many parts of Europe?
One important chapter of this tradition is connected to Hungary, John Hunyadi, and the Battle of Belgrade in 1456.
In the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire was expanding rapidly into southeastern Europe. After Sultan Mehmed II captured Constantinople in 1453, his attention turned toward Belgrade (Nándorfehérvár) — one of the most important fortresses guarding the Kingdom of Hungary.
In 1456, Ottoman forces besieged the fortress.
The Hungarian military commander John Hunyadi gathered forces to defend it, while the Franciscan preacher John of Capistrano helped rally Christian troops.
The battle became one of the most famous confrontations between the Hungarian kingdom and the Ottoman Empire.
On 22 July 1456, Hunyadi's forces achieved a major victory and forced the Ottoman army to retreat. The victory became a celebrated moment in Hungarian and European history.
🔔 But what about the bells?
Before and during the campaign, Pope Callixtus III called for prayers and church bells to be sounded around midday in support of the struggle against the Ottoman advance.
The practice became strongly associated with the victory at Belgrade.
Over the centuries, the noon bell became one of the enduring reminders of the 1456 victory and of the defense of Belgrade. The Hungarian Embassy in Belgrade itself describes the midday bells as a lasting reminder of Hunyadi and the defenders of the city.
