You are not a tourist / Budapest Under the surface spaces in Budapest, 8th District - for new comers/Erasmus students to encourage integration and to support small businesses.

This website is targeted at new comers to the city - whether that be students, interns, or other temporary residents. This is a resource for some of the independently run spaces in the 8th district, those located off the 'tourist track'. We have chosen to advertise spaces which integrate and benefit the 8th district, as other areas of Budapest have already been gentrified and taken over for the in

terest of the tourist trade and big businesses. Our focus lies here, in supporting positive projects and organisations. From our own experience as Erasmus students - we wanted to create a website and map that showed a selection of alternative places to those in the centre of the city, which are usually targeted at Erasmus students. This would encourage the integration of new comers into independent, community focused, honest spaces. Spreading the word on these locations will also ensure they continue to thrive, and develop the surrounding area both socially and economically; as well as changing the 8th district's reputation in the city.

Formerly a workers pub, the building has had its following of locals for years. Although the owners changed in September 2014, the locals still pour in to what the owners describe ‘the most interesting district’. Hintalo/(The rocking horse)is run by four handsome owners all from different countries, and are keen to maintain a healthy balance between their guests – local regular and new. Full of enthusiasm and passion, they call it a ‘dream come true’ and an open place for everything. They hold regular board game nights, open mic sessions and they have two friendly Djs.

Macska is a two tied vegetarian/vegan café with an upper deck of cushions and hammocks giving it a friendly living room feel. Surrounded by wooden carved cats it’s a perfect spot to relax. It opened in March 2010 after the owner fell in love with the district. It attracts a regular crowd of locals, tourists, students from CEU, LMBT members, vegetarians and vegans. Biweekly they hold a Jewish-harp club night, monthly exhibition openings and thematic Dj’s focusing on folk, jazz and South American music. Macska has a love for the district and the locals and supports the area through working with the local market, food producers and sources most of the beers, wine and juices from the area too.

Deeper into the 8th District among more residential areas, tucked inside a courtyard you can find Aurora. A new comer to the district opening in October 2014, it has drawn a loyal crowd. The owners purchased the place as a house as it was in ok condition. Aurora is funded through the bar and organized fundraisers, and has 18 volunteers working there. They also own SRLY in the 6th District which they are keen to move into the 8th. They hosts a huge range of events from Tai Chi, local folk music, Gypsy day, Portuguese day, experimental jazz nights, events for children, talks on gentrification and social issues. Everything! This attracts a full range of guests from the locals down the street to artists, musicians, mums, immigrants, tourists and young intellectuals. Described as ‘Napközi’ - this translates to ‘an after school club for adults’.

Just round from Rákóczi tér you can find Csiga. (’Snail’ in English) 20 years ago the building was owned by an Irish man called Oran. Now it is a relaxing hub for drinking, eating, working etc. It holds an impressive winding staircase up to a mezzanine level with more seating, and plants hanging everywhere. The majority of the crowd found here are regulars, with some locals and tourists joining as the word spreads on this wonderful place. The owners are proud to be in the 8th district and love the area, giving the place a very relaxed, oraganic feel.

Lumen is located in an active spot. Formally a tailor’s workshop on a quiet street; it is now situated within a pedestrianized square, with outdoor seating front and back. The pride themselves on their home roasted coffee, their plants and their guests. Holding urban/smart talks on Mondays, free jazz sessions on Tuesdays as well as Djs and Hungarian Folk nights. ‘This is roman, some people like, some people don’t- it’s not a typical place – it’s not fancy, it’s not posh – I like our guests as they are open minded – it is a great hub, artists, DJs, locals – everybody.’ Lumen opened in 2012 and is linked with Lumen photo foundation and gallery next door. The 8th district is an important location for them due to the links with photography. Over the years the area has changed alot -there was a boom in the 7th district - which affected them also. Lumen is on the cusp of the tourist areas but strongly maintains its individual stance in the area.
