Budapest is home to one of the most charming (and affordable) Christmas markets in Europe that takes place on Vörösmarty Square (28. November 2014 - 01. January 2015.) in the city centre, easily accessible by public transport (M1 underground at Vörösmarty tér, M1, M2, M3 metro lines at Deák tér station, tram 2 on the Pest side of the Danube: get off at Vigadó tér stop).

Highlights: The market is a great source of quality handmade gifts: knitted hats, leather products, pottery, jewelry, kitchen utensils, homedecor items, culinary delicacies.

The food court offers typical Hungarian and international dishes: stuffed cabbage, grilled and roast meats, sandwiches, strudel, beigli and other pastries and cakes, and of course typical winter drinks: hot wine, punch, grog, tea an coffee.

Concerts, the visit of Santa Claus on 06. December, children programs and playhouse (weekdays: 14.00-18.00, weekends: 10.00-13.00 and 16.00-19.00) are permanent programs each year.

The Christmas Festival at Szt. István Square (between 28. November and 01. January 2015.) in front of the Basilica is the second most popular festive fair in Hungary's capital. The largest church of the city gives a spectacular background to the fair and there's also a small ice rink.

Christmas market

After spending the winter in Europe and eating and drinking our way through a dozen or more Christmas markets, we have to hand it to you, Budapest, you have the best Christmas Markets in Europe. When we were able to stop ourselves from gorging on delicious pork knuckle and tasty sausages, washed down with spicy glühwein, it was a treat just to wander around browsing the stalls selling crafts and Christmas decorations.
We love you Budapest, Elsa

YOU CAN’T LEAVE BUDAPEST WITHOUT EATING…

Gulyás (better known as goulash outside of Hungary). This might sound like the obvious choice, but gulyás is not only delicious and typifies many Hungarian flavors, but is also really misunderstood, so it’s worth trying the real thing while visiting Budapest. Gulyás is a rich, flavorful soup made primarily of beef, potatoes, and paprika—though it’s not a stew, as is commonly thought by travelers. (The typical Hungarian stew would be called pörkölt—which should also be sampled while in town.) The best versions also come with homemade pinched pasta (csipetke). You might not want to eat this hearty soup every day, but soups are an integral part of a Hungarian meal and you cannot leave Budapest without trying it.

Gulyás is always served with thick slices of crusty white bread. It is prepared with sweet paprika, so it is never a hot (spicy) dish. However, Hungarians like to spice things up at the table so restaurants always offer hot paprika (either a paste or a dried version) so you can add heat to the dish. Locals like to eat gulyás accompanied by a glass of local red wine such as kékfrankos (blaufrankisch) or kadarka.

Summer in Budapest gets all the love, but Budapest in the winter is especially beautiful (and less crowded). Here’s what to do in a romantic, snow-covered Budapest.

Budapest in November

It’s November and the days are already shorter, evenings are much cooler and a few leafs are changing color. Most of the summer crowds have gone home so you can actually enjoy some solitude as you take in the sights of the city.

Budapest is a walking city and the fall weather makes it ideal to wander around on foot with many cozy cafés and restaurants offering their retreat if needed when temperatures cool down. With over 100 museums and galleries the city also offers many indoor attractions and activities to suite every interest.

The fall is also the perfect time to visit one of the many parks in Budapest or plan a day trip to Szentendre or the Danube Bend and take in the beautiful scenery of fall foliage with the changing colors of autumn leafs.

If you need more reasons to visit Budapest in the fall, keep in mind that hotels and flights are cheaper and you can use your savings to enjoy some of the great restaurants in the city.
