On view for the first time: Raoul Coutard’s Indochina photo archive

Before he created the visual world of Breathless, Pierrot le Fou and Jules and Jim, Raoul Coutard lived through the Indochina War as a soldier and photographer. The public has never had access to this archive of nearly 4,000 images, taken between 1950 and 1954.
An exclusive collaboration between BIFF and ECPAD Paris now allows these images to be seen for the first time. Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the final years of the French presence, seen from a deeply human perspective. This is not conventional military documentation, but the raw vision of a future great cinematographer.
The exhibition does not take place in a sterile gallery space. Following last year’s Robby Müller show, where the photographs were presented alongside a recreated period hotel room, the installation uses textures and surfaces to evoke the environment of a war zone. If you were there, you know what to expect.

🖼️ Budapest Contemporary closes today at the Bálna!

On the final day of the fourth Budapest Contemporary art fair, nearly 70 exhibitors and thousands of artworks are still waiting for collectors and art lovers. For the first time this year, creative fields closely related to fine art receive greater emphasis: alongside design and fashion, there is a large-scale contemporary jewellery exhibition.
Highlights of the programme:

▪️ "The Collector's Home": a space of more than 400 square metres showing how design and art coexist, with contemporary and vintage furniture, lamps and floral installations. Designed by Judit Osvárt and Tímea Tóth.
▪️ Close to the Body: a selection curated by Katalin Spengler, featuring twenty Hungarian artists and two mini retrospectives (Veronika Fábián and Flóra Vági).
▪️ Csaba Kertész's collection: original photographs of key figures in Hungarian and international musical life from the 1950s and 1970s.
▪️ KÉPEZŐ Gallery: a selection from a charity auction, with proceeds supporting non-profit education programmes.
▪️ Works by Media Design students from MOME.

There is more beyond the fair: a two-week installation runs at W Budapest until 10 October, and on 7 October the W Lounge hosts an evening where art, fashion and music meet, with DJ Harvey Ambomo (free, registration required).

Ticket sales for the 3rd BIFF - Budapest International Film Festival open on 6 October at 10:00! 🎬
Nine days, 45 films, one cinema. From 24 October to 1 November, the Corvin will screen the films that dominated this year's festival circuit.

🎞 Opening film: The Diary of a Chambermaid by Golden Bear winner Radu Jude
🎞 Closing film: A24's Club Kid
🎞 Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine, starring John Malkovich
🎞 Taika Waititi's Klara and the Sun, with Jenna Ortega
🎞 Anton Corbijn's A Talent for Murder, with Helen Mirren
🎞 László Nemes's Moulin, screened from a 35 mm print
🎞 Mike Leigh's Tender Loving Care, which he has said will be his last film
🎞 And a surprise film dedicated to the memory of Béla Tarr. All we can tell you for now is that it's not a Tarr film, and it runs between 2 and 3 hours.
There's horror, documentary, experimental cinema and a western retrospective too, with a gala screening every single day.

🎭 Anniversary contemporary dance festival at MU Színház, 9-10 October!
Ten years ago, Simkó Beatrix Trisha and Grecsó Zoltán premiered their choreography . Since then it has toured to New York and seven European countries more than 50 times, and in 2018 it won the Grand Prize at the Tánc Fesztiválja in Veszprém. The anniversary is now marked with a two-day festival.
The 50-minute duet places the Greek myth in a contemporary setting and examines love, adaptation and identity from a radically new perspective. Its central question: what happens when two people experience the same love at entirely different tempos and with different views of the world? The mythological underworld gives way to the gently cruel reality of everyday life, expressed solely through movement.
The visual design is by Dániel Dömölky and the sound design by Ábris Gryllus.
Besides the stage performance, the programme includes:

▪️ a film screening (the dance film based on the performance, directed by Dániel Dömölky, cinematography by András Táborosi)
▪️ an audience talk
▪️ a party
The festival aims to engage in dialogue with the local community, so the workshops are open to everyone.

🎬 BIFF - Budapest International Film Festival returns this October!

From 24 October to 1 November, the Budapest International Film Festival (BIFF) will return to Corvin Cinema for its third edition.
Among the first films announced are two exciting new Hungarian productions: László Nemes’ French-language Moulin and Lili Horvát’s English-language My Notes on Mars, starring Mackenzie Davis and Rupert Friend.
A total of 45 films will be screened throughout the festival, with the full programme arriving at the end of September.
