A következő néhány posztban a szomszédos Szlovákia rejtett kincseit szeretném bemutatni nektek.
Pozsonyt sokszor láttam már, de főleg a belvárost, a külső kerületekben található látnivalók mindig elmaradtak, és a közigazgatásilag hozzá tartozó Dévényt is elmulasztottuk megnézni eddig.
Pedig a kilátás miatt mindkét helyet megéri felkeresni. A Slavín emlékmű Pozsony belvárosa felett Közép-Európa legnagyobb háborús emlékműve, 52 m magas (39 méter magas obeliszk és 11 méter magas a rajta lévő szovjet katona szobra). Az emlékműhöz vezető panoráma út látványban is gazdag a Monarchia idejében épült villák miatt.
Dévény vára (Devínsky hrad) stratégiailag is fontos pont volt már a kőkorszak óta lakott helyként tartják számon. A várrom a 212 m magas várhegy tetején lévő 80 méter magas mészkő szirten áll.
A II. világháborút követően 1948-tól a szögesdróttal lezárt határszakasz, a "vasfüggöny" övezetéhez tartozott, állandó katonai jelenléttel a vár alatt lévő faluban. 1989-ig közel négyszáz ember vesztette életét, az áldozatok neve a Duna szintjével egy magasságban állított kőportálon ma is olvasható.
Jelenleg a Pozsonyi Városi Múzeum kiállítása tekinthető meg a várban, és külön épületben látogatható a vasfüggönyhöz kapcsolódó kiállítás is.

In the next few posts, I’d like to introduce you to some hidden gems of neighboring Slovakia.

I’ve visited Bratislava many times before, but mostly just the city center. The attractions located in the outer districts were always left out, and we had also missed Devín, which administratively belongs to the city.

Yet both places are definitely worth visiting for the views alone. The Slavín Memorial, towering above downtown Bratislava, is the largest war memorial in Central Europe. It stands 52 meters high, consisting of a 39-meter obelisk topped by an 11-meter statue of a Soviet soldier. The panoramic road leading up to the memorial is also visually impressive thanks to the villas built during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

Devín Castle (Devínsky hrad) has been considered a strategically important site since prehistoric times, as the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The castle ruins stand on an 80-meter limestone cliff atop the 212-meter-high castle hill. According to legend, a noble knight once rescued the nun he loved from a nearby monastery, and while fleeing their pursuers, they headed toward the castle. Since there was only one way out of the fortress, they threw themselves into the Danube below, and at the very spot where they hit the water, a rock instantly rose from the river.

For centuries, the castle played an important role in history. Among its owners and inhabitants were the Romans and Celts, as well as the Moravian prince Rastislav, members of the Árpád dynasty, and the Czech king Ottokar II of Bohemia. Eventually, after the death of the descendants of Palatine Pál Pálffy, it came into the possession of the Pálffy family of Malacky.

After World War II, from 1948 onward, the area became part of the barbed-wire border zone of the “Iron Curtain,” with a constant military presence in the village below the castle. Until 1989, nearly four hundred people lost their lives here while attempting to escape. The names of the victims can still be read today on a stone memorial portal erected at the same height as the Danube’s water level.

Today, visitors can explore an exhibition of the Bratislava City Museum inside the castle, while a separate building hosts an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Iron Curtain.

I am qualifide Guide 😊

Dear colleagues and friends,

On the 21st February the qualified tourist guides and their associations around the world are going to celebrate once again the International Tourist Guide Day 2017.

This has been a special day for us since 1985, when our dear colleague Titina Loizidou from Cyprus - then President of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations - first had the idea of celebrating a day for the promotion of our tourist guide profession across the world.

Ever since, this day has grown into a really important event for all of us, tourist guides, their partners and friends, the society in general.
More tourist guide associations and federations have been joining FEG and the WFTGA and more people around the globe have the benefit to meet our professional tourist guides in their own countries of qualification and attend their free guided tours to be offered each year on the 21st February. Or sometimes even for more days.

Thanks to you all, my colleagues, the tourist guides for offering so many free tours and organising various events across Europe and the world,

Thanks to our tourism partners and stakeholders, who trust us, consult us and respect our work for decades,

Thanks to the groups and individuals, who keep choosing to see and experience our countries, our cultural and natural heritage through our eyes,

Thanks to the open-minded and inspired tourism policy makers, who have realised that guiding means representing our countries' and Europe's image as a destination and interpreting our heritage,

I wish to all a happy International Tourist Guide Day for 2017 and may each year bring more new ideas, inspiration and people to be guided by our dear colleagues in tours on this special day.

Efi Kalampoukidou
FEG Ex.Co. President
