A statue of king Chao Anouvong, the last monarch of the Kingdom of Vientiane. He lead his people in a rebellion against Siam (1826-1828). He lost his throne and the city of Vientiane was razed to the ground. The current city of Vientiane is located on the Mekong river, which is the border with nowadays Thailand.

I decided to give the ÖBB Nightjet sleeper train another try after the first time I used them in early 2022, it wasn’t really special, with the breakfast being a hard bun and cold cup of butter. Well, it didn’t really pan out as I didn’t get a breakfast at all this time around!

Traveling the so-called Jungle Railway across Malaysia between Johor Bahru in the south and Tumpat close to the border with Thailand. It's the only sleeper train in Malaysia and it shows it's age, but when you can look beyond that, you will see that this is one of the must-travel sleeper trains.

No, these aren't the remains of the Buddha's of Bamyan in Afghanistan, but what are we looking at? They're man-made alleys where marl (limestone) was cut out by hand for centuries at the former ENCI open pit mine near Maastricht, The Netherlands.
