Gebug ende is a rain summoning ritual as well as a folk game for the people of Seraya Village, Karangasem Regency of Bali.

This ritual is performed in the form of games by both men and children during the dry season and after farming. The game uses tools called gebug and ende. The Gebug Ende tradition started after the battle that took place between the Karangasem Kingdom and the Selaparang Kingdom.

The Karangasem Kingdom troops consist of the people of Seraya Village, Angantelu Village, and Bubug Village. This troop won the battle due to heavy rains, which were believed to be help from Hyang Widhi. They then returned to their respective villages after the war ended. At that time Seraya Village was hit by a prolonged drought. Remembering their victory in the war, these troops then carried out a ceremony begging for rain to Hyang Widhi accompanied by war games. Since then, the Gebug ende ritual has become a tradition for the people of Seraya Village.

The Gebug ende ritual is carried out by using a bat and a deterrent. The bat is in the form of rattan with a length of about 1.5 meters to 2 meters which is called gebug. While the deterrent is in the form of woven dry cowhide with a circular shape called ende. The players wear traditional Balinese clothes which are red, yellow, green and golden.

The Gebug ende ritual is performed by the people of Seraya Barat Village, Karangasem Regency. This ritual is also carried out by the people of West Seraya Village who have moved to Patas Village, Buleleng Regency. The game is carried out by attacking other players with a bat and defending against attacks using a parry. Gebug ende performances are performed in a wide and flat place. The staging area is divided into two and limited by ropes and bamboo. Some for the players and some for the spectators.

The Gebug ende ritual begins with a request that the game will run smoothly and can provide prosperity for the community. Afterwards, the players and spectators received welcome and advice from the organizers. The game is led and supervised by a referee. The first turn is given to the boys, then replaced by the adults. The rules in Gebug Ende are that players can only hit the part from the waist up to the head. The game ends when one player is unable to counter attack from his opponent. The games are also accompanied by musical instruments like ceng-ceng, flute, kempul, tawak-tawak, and gamelan gong kebyar. 🙏
