NYEPI (Balinese Day of Silence) is on Thursday this week

The lead up to any big Balinese ceremony is busy.

Offerings to be made, food to be prepared and temples to be made all pretty.

The Day of Silence will be when we put our feet up, close our eyes and rest.

Three to four days before Nyepi, the biggest purification ritual is held which is known as Melasti and also Melis.

During this ceremony, lines and lines of local Hindus carrying symbols of the Gods, will journey from their village to the sea, lake or a holy spring for a special purification.

Priests lead this ritual walk.

There will be traditional gamelan musicians also joining this procession.

My husband was born in Pidpid, Karangasem and the closest ocean to them is Amed which is 23 kms away. To drive it is approximately 30 minutes, to walk one way it is 4.5 hours according to google maps.

Why the beach or holy spring?

It is performed as a ritual to cleanse the world from all impurities and bad karma, through the symbolic act of acquiring the Tirta Amerta, “the water of life”.

Water is a cleansing element in Balinese Hindu belief.

Both positive and negative elements are brought here to be cleansed, as opposing forces are equally important for balance in the world.

Positive deities are blessed and thanked with gifts such as offerings and prayers.

The negative spirits, the demons (the bhuta/kala) are appeased with blood sacrifices to keep death, disease and pandemics away.

This ceremony also cleans the human body as well as the entire earth from the badness or bad spirits.

The symbols of gods are then returned to the temple where worshipping continues for prosperity and peace for the entire world.
