Krekel is one of those traditional local foods you may not find in tourist restaurants, but you might meet in everyday village life.

It is simple, local, and closely connected to the way people use what is available around them. For us, this is part of what makes traveling in Indonesia interesting: not only seeing beautiful places, but also learning how people eat, cook, share food, and keep small traditions alive.

Do you want to experience this kind of authentic local life with us? Come explore Indonesia through everyday food, village stories, and real moments with local people.

We spent 6 days exploring the authentic side of Central Java with Mr. David. Starting from Solo, we continued to Dieng, then spent 3 days exploring the surroundings of Magelang.

The goal was clear — to experience Java differently and see more of its authentic side.

Traveling around Indonesia, especially Java, you’ll notice coconut trees almost everywhere. 🌴

Locals often call them “the tree of a thousand benefits” because almost every part of the tree can be used.

From food ingredients like coconut milk and young coconut, to building materials from coconut wood, and even handmade crafts from the leaves, shell, and fibers — coconut trees are deeply connected to daily life in many Indonesian villages.

Last month, we had a special visit from Michael and Ms. Diana, who wanted to experience Java in a different way.

They explored Central Java with Asep, enjoying a more personal journey and connecting with the local culture along the way.

After that, they continued to East Java with Sam, where they discovered a more adventurous side of the island, with stunning landscapes to match.

At Discover Local Ways, we love finding new places that we can later include in our trips.

This time, we explored Grojogan Watu Purbo, a waterfall near Yogyakarta. It’s actually man-made, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful.

We ended up spending around two hours there — playing in the water, relaxing, and just enjoying the place.

What we really liked is how easy it is to get there. No long hike, no detour — just a quick stop from the main road. So you can easily add it to your route to Dieng without changing your plans too much.

Want to explore Java beyond the main tourist hubs? Contact us and experience Java differently. 🌿

Not all waterfalls in Java require a long hike.
In Baturaden, you’ll find many beautiful waterfalls hidden in the forest — places where you walk deeper into nature and enjoy the feeling of untouched surroundings.
But there are also a few spots like Curug Bayan, where you can experience the atmosphere of a Javanese waterfall without a demanding trek.
It’s an easy-to-reach waterfall, making it a good option for families with small kids or older travelers who still want to enjoy nature, but at a slower and more comfortable pace.
At Discover Local Ways, we always try to adjust each trip based on the people we travel with — their pace, age, and what feels right for them.
Because experiencing Java shouldn’t be about how far you can walk, but about how much you can enjoy along the way. 🌿

Discover the timeless beauty of Candi Prambanan the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that continues to amaze travelers from around the world.

Standing gracefully in the heart of Java, Prambanan is more than just ancient stone architecture it is a sacred masterpiece where history, culture, and spirituality come together. Every towering temple and intricate carving reflects the glory of an ancient Hindu civilization, telling stories of devotion, power, and artistry that have survived for centuries.

From the legendary tale of Roro Jonggrang to the detailed reliefs of Hindu epics carved into stone walls, every corner of this complex offers a journey back in time. As sunlight touches the temples throughout the day, Prambanan transforms into a breathtaking scene of golden shadows and sacred silence.

A must-visit destination for travelers seeking culture, history, and unforgettable views in Indonesia where every step feels like walking through an ancient world still alive today.

And just within Central Java, the journey doesn’t stop here travelers can also explore the majestic Candi Borobudur, located around 45–53 km away (about 1–1.5 hours by land). While Prambanan lies to the east of Yogyakarta, Borobudur stands to the northwest, offering a completely different yet equally breathtaking experience. Together, these two UNESCO masterpieces showcase the incredible harmony of Hindu and Buddhist heritage in one region, making Central Java a truly unforgettable destination for culture and history lovers.

If you’d like to visit, just send us a DM-we’d be happy to be part of your journey.

If you’re planning to visit Dieng during the rainy season, don’t worry—it’s still worth going.

When we were there the last week, we visited places like Arjuna Temple Complex, Sikidang Crater, and the hot springs. It does rain quite often, but that’s also what makes the atmosphere feel different.

Just don’t forget to bring warm clothes—Dieng feels colder, especially when it rains.

It stands as one of the cultural heartlands of Java and an important center of the Mataram Islamic civilization.
