The toughest job in the world?

The Ijen volcano in East Java hosts the world's largest acidic crater lake. But it also hosts one of the last remaining active sulfur mines in the world. The otherworldly setting have captivated travellers for centuries, but its sulfur mine by the lake is a controversial side of this unique tourist attraction; enveloped in toxic fumes, workers chip away at the hardened blocks and carry up to 90 kilo loads back up the crater twice a day, earning an average of 8 dollars per trip. Many miners, like Hartono, don't use protective equipment like gloves and masks.

Short-term exposure to highly concentrated levels of sulfur dioxide can be deadly, and daily exposure can lead to breathing difficulties, airway obstructions, and impaired lung function, according to the Center for Disease Control.

I had a sublime nature experience at the Ijen Crater, but it was my talk with Hartono that has stuck with me. Mining is one of the highest paid professions in the region, and the workers are well-respected members of their communities. It is important to respect these men, and remember that this is their job and their way of life - Hartono is proud of his job, but in the future he hopes to get a job in the tourism industry. Sulfur miners are part of the socio-economic ecosystem in the Ijen crater, Banyuwangi.

They work without work regulations and without health insurance.

They are not miners employed by a company. They are informal workers who mine sulfur and sell their products to sulfur collectors.

Their income is determined by how strong their shoulders can carry the sulfur, how strong their lungs are in enduring the dense sulfur fumes, and how strong their feet are in navigating the steep, rocky path from the sulfur furnace to the summit of Ijen.

They do this to survive and to make a living.
