There are many interpretations as to the meaning of udeng.

Some say it is a symbol of Garuda, who guards our mind from all bad influences. Others said that udengs are like an antenna between God and human. Some say the tip of the triangle crest of the udeng is a symbol of the Hindu triad: Brahma, Wisnu, and Siwa.

The color and pattern of the udeng worn is specific to the certain occasion. For a temple ceremony or anniversary a white udeng is used. For a human related ceremony such as wedding, tooth filling, birthday, etc an udeng made of coloured Batik cloth is preferred and for a cremation or burial ceremony a black udeng or batik motif with black accent is used.

Styles of Udengs also change depending on the status/position of the person. For example: priests and village security will use styles specific to their role.

PECALANG or LOCAL VILLAGE SECURITY have traditionally been the keepers of order for Balinese village ceremonies. However, with the rapid changes facing Bali, their role has evolved to become much more critical in ensuring the harmony of the many different communities in Bali.

In areas with high levels of migrants from other parts of Indonesia, the pecalang play an important role in their integration into the local community. They are typically the first level of defense to any local threat and are also much more widely respected than the police as the members of the pecalang are recruited from the local village.

Bali Bucket List Challenge #7 - DESA TRUNYAN
This village is nestled on the slopes of Mount Batur and is accesible only by boat across Lake Batur. The remoteness of the village has enabled it to keep many of its Bali Aga characteristics from disappearing. Famous for its; Pura Pancering Jagat temple, Barong Brutuk, a banyan tree said to be over 1100yrs old and its distinct method of laying its dead to rest, this is a trip into the Bali past.

Our Tip: To make the most of your visit there, do some research into the village beforehand. Here are a few useful links:

Bali Bucket List Challenge #5 - WATCH A TOOTH FILING CEREMONY
Without doubt this is one of the most unique experiences that you could see here in Bali. As a Balinese person comes of age (usually around puberty) they will undergo a filing of their teeth to symbolise reaching maturity. The 6 teeth that a filed represent the negative human impulses that we must control as adults. It is a significant ceremony and numerous nervous adolescents (and sometimes adults) will all complete the ritual in the same ceremony.

Our Tip: Make friends with some Balinese people and ask if there are any tooth filing ceremonies soon to occur in their village.

Bali Bucket List Challenge #4 - DAY OF SILENCE
Can you be silent for a whole day? No talking, no phone, no internet...

Our Tip : As there are next to no lights at all on in Bali, Nyepi makes the perfect night for star gazing and waiting for those elusive shooting stars.
