A touch of nostalgia - Kawa Ijen in the year 2004

As the founder of CocosTravel, I embarked on my first biking adventures from Bali to Java in 2003—driven by a destination that still fascinates me to this day: the legendary Ijen Volcano.

In 2004, we took things a step further: we actually rode our bikes all the way to the rim of the Ijen crater. Once at the top, the vast volcanic landscape lay spread out at our feet. Then the real adventure began—a spectacular downhill ride to Paltuding, followed by a journey deep into the tropical rainforest before finally reaching Banyuwangi.

Back then, there were no well-developed biking routes, no ready-made GPS tracks, and hardly anyone who had ever undertaken such a tour. We set out to discover new paths—cutting through a fascinating landscape, far removed from mass tourism.

And that is exactly where the story of CocosTravel began.

After a night under the stars, experience a fairytale sunrise over the island of Sumbawa, followed by a swim with whale sharks in Saleh Bay. Cycle along Sumbawa's coast with a small group before immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Pulau Moyo and taking a dip in the Mata Jitu Waterfall. On the return trip to Lombok by pirate ship, marvel at the sunset over Mount Rijani, which we'll see up close several more times two days later during a hike to the Tui Kelep Waterfall. On September 8th, the sails will be raised again for the spectacular bike adventure tour from Bali to the whale sharks in Saleh Bay. We'll start our journey in Bali by bike and take a ferry to the neighboring island of Lombok. Two days of biking through stunning scenery and a short boat trip will take us to Gili Air. From there, we'll set sail and spend four nights on a pirate ship. From the ship, we'll explore the exotic nature of Moyo and Sumbawa by bike. The return trip to Bali, the "Island of the Gods," is by bike and speedboat from Gili Air, and after 14 days, this dream trip concludes in Sanur. Highlights include the Mata Jitu, Sanggallo, Sendang Gile, and Tui Kelep waterfalls, Mount Rinjani, and, of course, the whale sharks in Saleh Bay.
