Welcome to a visual documentary chronicling the island of Bali in the early 20th century, a time when Western cameras captured our lives with awe, but from a colonial vantage point.
This silent film depicts the daily lives of the Balinese people: from rice paddies to temples, from markets to cremation ceremonies, all captured in silence, yet holding thousands of stories of the wisdom and resilience of Balinese people before the world recognized them as a tourist destination.
