Togetherness :)
The Kübelwagen in Indonesia: VW Camat or VW Safari:
VW Type 181 Kübelwagen ( eng.: "bucket car" ) is the successor of the first Kübelwagen , a light military vehicle, used by the German army from 1940 - 1945. The VW Type 181 Kübelwagen were first used in Indonesia by “Camats” during the late-1970’s to mid 1980’s. Camats are the heads of sub districts in Indonesia whereat a sub district is an area within a regency or city. Camats are civil servants, responsible to the regent or mayor. Volkswagen produced the VW Safari from 1973 - 1980 near its capital, Jakarta. By the end of the 1980’s decade, more and more VW Camats have been used by the public as affordable and better alternatives then imported cars and more and more tourists from Western countries used this method of “getting around” for two reasons:
1). It was and is a special car and just a cool mode of transport.
2). People could drive along roads which were not accessible by normal cars or busses, especially in times where infrastructure was not yet at its current standard.
With the time the term “Camat” was released by “Safari“ ( how the Kübel was called in Mexico ), since it was easier to pronounce by foreigners, but most of all it explains obviously what it can be: A hell lot of FUN ! Whether roof up or down, whether on or off road, each time somebody drives with a Safari, it is going to be a unique adventure !
