This is what La Gundri Bay on Nias off Sumatra looked like when Thornton Fallander and I arrived in June of 1980 hoping for a full moon swell. The adventure of how we got there and found the fantasy wave is a movie in itself, but Thornton to his credit defied all odds to get to surf the tropical surfing fantasy and features along with Joe Engel (RIP) on a second trip in 1981 in our film “Storm Riders “.
