🇮🇩 Why August 17 is such a big deal in Indonesia

Today, Indonesia celebrates 81 years of independence.

On August 17, 1945, just days after Japan surrendered in World War II, Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed Indonesia’s independence in Jakarta.

But saying “Indonesia became independent” makes it sound much simpler than it really was.

For centuries, different parts of what is now Indonesia had experienced foreign colonial rule, and after the 1945 proclamation, the fight for independence continued. Indonesians fought for years before the Netherlands formally recognized Indonesia’s sovereignty in 1949.

That’s why August 17 isn’t just a national holiday.

It’s a celebration of freedom, resilience, identity and the people who fought for the Indonesia we know today. ❤️🤍

So if you’re visiting Indonesia today, you might see red and white flags everywhere, neighbourhood competitions, traditional games, parades and celebrations.

You’re not just seeing a festival.

If Nusa Penida is on your August itinerary, watch this first. 🌊

Angel’s Billabong is one of the most beautiful spots in Nusa Penida, but the ocean conditions can change quickly. During high tide or rough sea conditions, waves can surge into the natural pool and over the surrounding rocks.

⚠️ Here’s what you need to know before visiting:

🌊 Strong waves
Large waves can suddenly crash into the billabong, even when the water looks calm from a distance.

🌀 Strong currents
The surrounding ocean can have powerful currents that may pull swimmers toward deeper water or rocks.

🪨 Sharp & slippery rocks
The rocks around Angel’s Billabong can be uneven, sharp and extremely slippery when wet.

🚨 Sudden waves
Never assume the water is safe just because it looks calm. A sudden wave can knock you off balance or sweep you toward the ocean.

How to stay safe:

✔️ Check the tide and weather conditions before visiting.
✔️ Follow local signs, barriers and staff instructions.
✔️ Stay away from the edge when waves are coming in.
✔️ Never turn your back on the ocean.
✔️ Don’t enter the natural pool when waves are surging over the rocks.
✔️ Avoid swimming when the sea conditions are rough.
✔️ If you’re unsure, ask your local guide before entering.

And remember: you don’t need to get into the water to enjoy Angel’s Billabong. Sometimes the safest choice is simply enjoying the view from a safe distance. 🤍
