Lampa-Lampa Explore Undiscovered Indonesia

Spent almost a week in the field with Maceo from Moving from one forest to another, crossing plantations, chasing tiny creatures deep into the night, and somehow always ending up with another good story along the way.

Always a pleasure meeting people who are incredibly talented, yet still curious, humble, and genuinely fun to explore with.

Hope our paths cross again somewhere out there, brother 🌿

Not endemic. Not rare.
But somehow the excitement never fades when you cross paths with one 🥰

And honestly, just because it’s 'common' doesn’t mean they'll show up when you actually go looking for them 😁😌

If something this small, with a wound that big, can survive - out here, in a harsh world that humans keep messing with - who are we to call them any less intelligent?

Witness something few ever will.

A fleeting moment in the life of the Javan Hawk-Eagle. Wild, rare, and deeply protected within Java’s forests.

Available only for a limited time.

Observe, don’t disturb.
Wildlife, as it should be.

We’ve been hoping to cross paths with this one for a while.

We knew the habitat, we kept coming back… and only after many trips, then our families finally surprised us with a huge 'gift': Boiga multomaculata/Marbled Cat-eyed Snake right in the middle of plantation.

Absolutely stunning. Small, but feisty. She wasn’t shy at all...stood her ground and made it very clear that this was her territory. We listened, admired from a respectful distance, and let her be.

As much as we love seeing wildlife up close, we love it even more knowing they’re thriving exactly where they belong. 🌱

This is why we do what we do.

Rain or shine, we still go herping 🌧️🐸

West Java in the rain with Michel...muddy boots, big smiles, and amazing herps.

No tag for Michel (his words: “I am old, not using Instagram or Tiktok ☺️”).

Funny thing is… he herps like a fit teenager 💪😂

Wild fun, done responsibly 🌿🦎

People often ask if a species is endangered, just to guess how hard it’ll be to find. But nature doesn’t always work that way.

Some endangered species stick to very specific pocket habitats, know the spot, and your chances are actually pretty good.

Meanwhile, some “common” species are so widespread that you often see them even when you’re not looking. Once you start searching, suddenly every place feels like a 50:50.

Labels change, influenced by many things, like (surprisingly 😌) politics, research (which also politic), habitat loss (which also politic 🤷‍♀️), timing and many more.

So for this one, Pseudocalotes tympanistriga, I didn’t overthink its status. We just knew it had a pocket habitat.

So when we found it outside that pocket? Felt like winning a lottery 💥

Leptophryne javanica might be one of Java’s least-photographed endemic amphibians.
Finding it usually means going far...well beyond the big cities of Java..and honestly, the wisest way is to spend at least two nights in the place where it calls home.

But as we all know, every bit of that effort is absolutely worth it.

Because when you’re lucky enough to meet this tiny toad, you’re also opening the door to encounters with so many other, equally remarkable forest dwellers.

So… when are we heading out again? 🌿🐸

After 10 trips, we finally had our first two female guests!!
And yes… that makes this one extra special for me.

and joined us in the forest, which felt personal, because most of the time, I’m the only female crew member at Lampa-Lampa (well, if we count , our in-and-out intern 😌, then technically two)

Of course, I was also very happy to have David along, and to be supported by and , along with Lampa-Lampa's best herping guide
Solid team, great energy! ⚡

But since I’m the one running this account 😎 (and yes, I’m the one who knows the password 🤪) I’m absolutely highlighting the women in the forest 💅🙆‍♀️

Swipe till the end and you might spot one of the rarest creatures in the tropical forests of West Java…
especially at night:
Homo sapiens, female💃💃💃💃
