✨​The History of Kertha Gosa, Klungkung✨
​Kertha Gosa is one of the most historical and culturally significant landmarks in Bali, located in the heart of Semarapura, Klungkung. The name comes from the ancient Sanskrit words: "Kertha" (meaning peace, order, or justice) and "Gosa" (derived from Bhasha, meaning announcement or discussion). Together, Kertha Gosa translates to "the place where the king meets with his ministers to discuss justice and peace."
​1. Establishment and Historical Background
​Built in the 18th Century: Kertha Gosa was built around 1686 – 1700 AD by Ida I Dewa Agung Jambe I, the first ruler of the Klungkung Kingdom, as an essential part of the Royal Palace (Puri Agung Semarapura).
​Primary Functions:
​Royal Court of Justice: It served as the supreme traditional court in Bali to hear and judge serious legal cases that could not be resolved at the village level.
​Royal Assembly Hall: It was a venue where the King met with his high priests (Bhagawanta), ministers, and customary law advisors to make vital decisions for the kingdom.
​2. The Dutch Colonial Era
​In April 1908, the tragic Puputan Klungkung (a heroic fight to the death against Dutch forces) led to the fall of the kingdom and the destruction of most of the royal palace. However, Kertha Gosa, the floating pavilion (Bale Kambang), and the main grand gate (Pemedal Agung) survived intact.
​During Dutch colonial rule (1908–1942), the Dutch retained Kertha Gosa as a Traditional Law Court (Adat Rechtspraak). The original carved wooden chairs and tables used by the judges, the king, and the accused are still preserved inside the pavilion today.
​3. Unique Architecture & Kamasan Wayang Ceiling Paintings
​The most striking feature of Kertha Gosa is its ceiling, which is covered in hundreds of classical Kamasan-style wayang (shadow-puppet) paintings:
​Kamasan Style: Painted by traditional artists from the nearby Kamasan village, known for preserving classical Balinese narrative art.
