The Java sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora), also called the Java finch or rice sparrow, has experienced a severe decline in the wild and is now considered a conservation concern.
The species has disappeared from many regions of its distribution. It has been introduced in many countries, such as Hawaii and the Philippines.
The species is native to Java, Bali and possibly Madura, Indonesia, with a wild population estimated at ~1,000–2,499 mature individuals.
This species is very common in aviculture and breeds fairly easily, but the numbers in the wild tell a different story.
We were thrilled to find a small population here in Bali with so many chicks and juveniles.
