Indonesia is taking a major step in protecting its cultural legacy. The Ministry of Culture has announced that 28,131 items from the collection of paleoanthropologist Eugene Dubois are expected to return to Indonesia in 2026, with the government preparing to designate the entire collection as National Cultural Heritage (C***r Budaya Peringkat Nasional). Minister of Culture Fadli Zon confirmed that the collection will be recognized as a single unified heritage rather than item by item, noting that key pieces such as Java Man and several important femur bones and artifacts have already been repatriated in earlier efforts.

Alongside the Dubois collection, the Pita Maha collection, a body of artwork originally exhibited in the 1930s and successfully brought back to Indonesia, has also been officially designated as national cultural heritage. As of August 2026, the Ministry of Culture has designated or recommended a total of 1,485 cultural items as National Cultural Heritage, reflecting the government’s growing commitment to reclaiming and safeguarding Indonesia’s historical and cultural treasures.

Indonesia has secured two spots on Bailey Robinson’s Wildlife Experience Index, a global ranking of the world’s 30 most compelling wildlife tourism experiences. The index evaluates destinations across six factors including animal rarity, remoteness, conservation value, exclusivity, accessibility, and the likelihood of an actual wildlife encounter, with each factor scored out of 10 for a total of 100.

Javan Rhino tracking at Ujung Kulon National Park in Banten claimed 5th place with a score of 85 out of 100, while orangutan habitat watching in the forests of Kalimantan landed 8th place with 84 out of 100. The two destinations stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences, including mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda which topped the list at 90 out of 100.

North Kalimantan (Kaltara) has claimed the top spot as Indonesia's most harmonious province, based on the Religious Harmony Index (Indeks Kerukunan Umat Beragama/IKUB) 2025 released by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The province scored 87.23, overtaking East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which had held the top position for three consecutive years.

In the national rankings, Kaltara placed above Southeast Sulawesi with a score of 86.52 and Bangka Belitung Islands at 85.41. The achievement reflects a steady upward trend, with Kaltara's IKUB score rising from 75.63 in 2021 to 87.23 in 2025.

The milestone is also attributed to Kaltara's diverse population, which includes 73.3 percent Muslim, 19.4 percent Protestant, 6.7 percent Catholic, and 0.6 percent of other faiths. This diversity is viewed not as a challenge, but as a powerful social asset that underpins the province's culture of peace, mutual respect, and harmony.

Indonesia's animated film "Garuda: Dare to Dream," directed by Ronny Gani, took home two awards at the Giffoni Film Festival 2026, held July 17 to 25 in Giffoni Valle Piana, Salerno, Italy. The film won the Gryphon Award for Best Film in the Elements +6 category, as well as the Lete Special Award, a distinction given to works that inspire young audiences through themes of perseverance, courage, and the pursuit of dreams.

Giffoni Film Festival is one of the world's most prestigious film festivals for children and young audiences, with thousands of young jurors from various countries participating in the selection process. The Bali Provincial Government has confirmed that the planned mass transportation system from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport to Canggu will no longer use the MRT, but will instead utilize the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) system, or autonomous electric tram. This project will be directly funded by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), with an investment of approximately IDR 2.2 trillion.

According to Bali Governor Wayan Koster, the change in scheme was the result of discussions with PT KAI. This environmentally friendly transportation project has been designed since 2020 as a more efficient and faster alternative to improve connectivity to Bali's densely populated tourist areas.
