Agoes & Agoes Management and Intercultural Consultants Agoes & Agoes is a Jakarta-based training, education, and consulting firm focusing in communications, management, and intercultural issues.

Founded in 1994, Agoes & Agoes, otherwise known as A&A, was created with the purpose of establishing better understanding among people of the world through intercultural knowledge and communications. Early in its operations, Agoes & Agoes catered exclusively to the embassy sectors and donor organizations. This included The United States Embassy, Canadian Embassy, and various European, as well as A

sian diplomatic institutions. Agoes & Agoes also catered to international donor organizations for long term engagements, which included The United States of Agency for International Development (USAID), and The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). As the firm evolved, Agoes & Agoes also began to cater to the private, as well as governmental institutions. Agoes & Agoes provided intercultural, communications, and management training to reputable energy companies such as Total E&P Indonesie, Hess Corporation, BP Indonesia, CNOOC, Chevron Indonesia Company, Chevron Pacific Indonesia, Exxonmobil Oil Indonesia, and Mobil Cepu Limited. Agoes & Agoes also served various governmental entities, such as the Indonesian Ministry of National Education and Culture, BP/SKK Migas and the National Parliament (DPR-RI). Aside from private companies, Agoes & Agoes also has had long-term standing relations in working with The American Field Service (AFS), which is a non-profit international exchange organization for students and adults that operates in more than 50 countries, and organizes and supports intercultural learning experiences. Since 2010, Agoes & Agoes has also focused further in providing more communication-specific services in communications. This includes providing training to various private and government sectors in written communication, verbal communication, internal communications, external communications, aligning strategic communications with mission and vision, comprehensive media training, and stakeholders communication training. Agoes & Agoes has provided the above services to companies such as Coca Cola, Krakatau Steel, and various insurance and global energy companies. We continually consult with national and international staff from multinational companies, state-owned enterprises, as well as donor agencies. When it comes to dealing with intercultural communication, we find that a common thread among clients is that they are being too complicated about it. This is some advice for internationals to build good intercultural relations between people of different cultures in the workplace:

1. Talk to them in the morning. Ask them where they live, how long did it take them to go to work (many internationals live in expensive apartments at the city's center, while many Indonesian staff live on the outskirts of the city requiring a 2-hour commute). When you ask them, you show you care, and that you have empathy. This builds trust and goodwill.

2. Have lunch with them at the warteg. Chill out, roll your sleeves, and sweat a bit at these traditional wartegs and warungs. You will get to cool off later. Talk and laugh. And don't always talk about work.

3. Smile more. We know you mean business, but hey, this is Indonesia. Smile and joke a bit. Don't need to overdo it, but show that you are an actual human.

4. Disclose more about yourself and your family life. Your wife's name, how many children you have, as well as your hobbies.

There you go! If you practice the above, you are on your way to becoming a more interculturally-sensitive person.

Realize that in the context of culture, we are always dealing with the cultural iceberg in mind. On top of the water represents the conscious and largely superficial concepts of culture (food, clothing, dancing, etc.), while beneath the water represents beliefs/knowledge that are subconscious and mostly taken for granted. Yet, it is what drives people's intercultural interactions everyday.
