OTHER SIDE OF P*K.

First group to take part in our Other Side of P*K experience last sunday. We are glad that things are slowly returning to normal and that people are returning to the outdoors. We are also happy that our hard work putting together routes for post covid is finally paying off and we get to share our side of Jakarta with you.

The Day before Lebaran.

Ramadhan month is very special, in the super diverse Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Moslem population. The month of fasting, exemplified by our increased giving and charity.

At , we wanted to do charity that was close to our hearts, involved cycling, and had direct impact.

So we decided to distribute “Nasi Bungkus” rice-based meals to the needy. To the “Orang Gerobak” (Push Cart People), Street Sweepers, and Street Buskers.

We always do everything in collaboration with others, for efficiency and effectiveness. Our big shout out to & their cycling communities for helping us make it into reality.

Why do it alone, if you can achieve so much more with others.

Super stoked for our Lebaran 2020 Charity, in collaboration with our friends , , .co, . We distributed hand sanitizers, basic food essentials, and instant noodles to a community of approximately 50 pax (15 households) in an urban kampung near Senayan Golf Course, in South Jakarta. COVID-19 situation has rendered this community losing jobs, and facing tougher economic conditions.

Today we took a trip to the new skatepark in central Jakarta. During the renovation of the big avenue, Jalan Sudirman that goes from central Jakarta to the south, the sidewalks were improved and this skatepark was built.

The building quality is not quite international standard but still it is nice to see the city government is trying to make public spaces more liveable.

Cars and “Gojek” or mobile phone powered motorcycle taxis, often wearing green, are the main form of vehicle found on the streets on Jakarta. Cyclists on the other hand are quite rare unlike in most western cities where people have since always recognized the benefits of riding a bike.

Motor vehicles here are so not used to cyclists that they often find themselves in a confused state when they see us at a traffic lights which always makes Europeans chuckle because in most western cities bicycles are often a more desirable form of commuting vehicle as it provides the city with clean air, free exercise and it doesn’t involve being stuck in a car in a jam. Hopefully the Indonesian government will come to recognize the benefits of educating the population on the benefits of clean transportation, clean air and road safety.

During one of our trips in Central Jakarta, we stopped in this residential area. This picture was taken in the early morning, maybe around 7:30 am. On the right we can see a mobile stall, which is painted in bright colors.

These stalls are mobile market stalls that sell cucumber, spinach, soy products and sometimes raw meats like chicken. They are a common sight in Jakarta but not the kind of thing we could expect to see in Europe. Mobile stalls are often a welcome attraction for tourists in Jakarta and we cannot help but to feel like Europe needs this sort of convenience!

Somewhere in central Jakarta, this street is filled on both sides with makeshift stalls that sell joints for plumbing. It is such a random thing to see, in a neighborhood filled with vintage architecture and government offices. Further down we come into a narrower street that leads into an area of makeshift houses.

This resemble the villages in the countryside of Indonesia where chickens run free in the streets alongside playing children, the “village vibe” often accentuated by a passing human powered food kart.

"Kampung Kebalen" BRIDGE

1st picture the Bridge before Floods and 2nd the Bridge after Floods.

Seeing Jakarta from a bicycle completely gives you a different perspective. Providing insights on life behind urban kampungs that few people venture into

So it deeply saddened us when we saw the destruction Jakarta flood brought on New Year's day... one bridge washed away in Kampung Kebalen, one of our favorite urban kampungs around Senopati area... our stomping grounds... here are the before and after pics

The giant moving statues dressed in blue accompanied by music played on traditional instruments by the boys in blue under the tree are called “Ondel ondel. We hired them as a surprise during one of our tours in central Jakarta and they did a great job and we will certainly have them back!

Unfortunately, in the streets you will see similar giant dancing puppets but they are not accompanied by a band of well-dressed smiling boys playing traditional instruments but a ragged looking bunch wheeling around a blaring obnoxious sound system. They ask for money whether you are in your car, walking or eating in an open air area which to most people is considered extremely rude.

The government has previously put in place measures to prevent such forms of harassment, we hope to see better initiatives from the city to improve the atmosphere on the streets.
