NYEPI DAY IN BALI “The Day of Silence” 🍃🙏🏻🍃

Nyepi is a Balinese "Day of Silence" that is commemorated every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to the Balinese calendar (in 2020, it falls on March 25). It is a Hindu celebration mainly celebrated in Bali, Indonesia. Nyepi, a public holiday in Indonesia, is a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese.
Nyepi is a day reserved for self-reflection, and as such, anything that might interfere with that purpose is restricted. The main restrictions are no lighting fires (and lights must be kept low); no working; no entertainment or pleasure; no traveling; and, for some, no talking or eating at all.
The effect of these prohibitions is that Bali's usually bustling streets and roads are empty, there is little or no noise from TVs and radios, and few signs of activity are seen even inside homes.

The only people to be seen outdoors are the Pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure the prohibitions are being followed.

The evening before Nyepi day, the Balinese hold the Ngrupuk Parade, where they carry large statues – known as Ogoh Ogoh – through Bali’s streets. These are giant monster dolls made of light materials: Wood, bamboo, paper, and Styrofoam. They are carried on bamboo platforms throughout the parade. They take the shape of mythological, evil creatures and gods to represent negative aspects of living things and criticize society and its latest issues.

The name Ogoh Ogoh is derived from the Balinese “ogah-ogah”, meaning “to shake”, and it represents the Bhuta-Kala or evil spirits, vices that need to kept away from humans. Many locals from the Banjar community will carry their Ogoh-Ogoh on the convoy, shaking it to make it look like it’s moving and dancing.

The parade ends with countless bonfires, when the laboriously designed monsters are burnt ceremonially and fall to ashes at the cemetery. The Balinese believe that bad spirits move into their monster craft works by making noise and playing instruments and can be banished by burning. It is an important act of purification for the locals to herald the new year and Nyepi, the following day.

This important Hindu ceremony is celebrated every 210 days according ti the Pawukon Calendar.

Galungan last for 10 days. During this period, the Balinese Hindu Gods visit the island to celebrate the victory of Dharma (Goodness) against Adharma (Wickedness).

People go home to their village and families, houses are cleaned, new clothes are worn, and compounds are full of the smell of incense and good food, shared activity and a feeling of happiness.

The day before (penampahan) people work together in busy preparation.

The men sacrifice pigs, and other animals, then prepare a shared offering feasts including lawar (minced meat with vegetables and coconut) spicy “base gede” and “sate” sticks.

Tall, tapered bamboo poles called penjor are intricately decorated and placed at the left side of each gate, lining the streets with beauty and grace. The woman weave offerings to place in a special shrine beside each penjor, decorated with a long woven leaf of fabric panel called lamak.
Every part of the penjor, which represents spiritual determination, the decorations are made from natural materials that sustain life, such as coconut leaves, traditional cakes, coins, and yellow or white cloth. Penjor can be used at other celebration as well.

At Galungan, one kind of long penjor and lamak indicate that someone in the household is newly married.

The day after Galungan is a time of relaxation. Many families go for picnics, visit and outings. The penjor will remain standing for 42 days, after which they are taken down, their decorations are burned and symbolically buried.

The ten days of Galungan celebrations give visitors an authentic idea of what religion means to Balinese people. It is a great time to visit Bali.

For over a thousand years, Balinese Hindu worshipers have been drawn to Pura Tirta Empul (Holy Water Temple), whose sacred springs are said to have been created by The God Indra and possess curative properties.
This tradition still continues almost unchanged, and today, aside from worshipers, tourists from all over the world also come to this place to marvel at its beauty and bathe in its refreshing blessed water.

The Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple is located in the village of Manukaya, near the town of Tampaksiring, not far from Ubud, in the Gianyar Regency, the cultural heart of Bali. The temple is situated just below the Presidential Palace of Tampaksiring.

As a Petirtaan or bathing center, Tirta Empul is quite a large temple complex and it takes at least 30 minutes to an hour to explore the entire site.
In the Balinese language, Tirta Empul loosely translated means water gushing from the earth, which for this reason Tirta Empul is regarded as a holy spring.
