Before the sun rises above the mountains of Flores, the sacred lakes of Danau Kelimutu awaken quietly beneath the morning mist.

The local Lio people call them Tiwu Telu ; the Three Sacred Lakes.

Long ago, the ancestors believed that when life ends, the soul continues its journey to Kelimutu.

The first lake, Tiwu Ata Mbupu, became the resting place of wise elders and respected ancestors.

The second, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, welcomed the souls of young people whose spirits remained pure and free.

And the third lake, Tiwu Ata Polo, was believed to hold the souls of those who lost their way during life.

But the lakes are alive.
Their colors change mysteriously: blue, green, black, sometimes red, as if the mountain itself is speaking to the world.

For the people of Flores, Kelimutu is not only a volcano. It is a sacred bridge between nature, ancestors, and the spirit of humanity itself.
