Welcome to Tanah Lot Temple, one of the most iconic and sacred places in Bali.
Ladies and gentlemen, as we are approaching Tanah Lot, I would like to share a little story about this beautiful and spiritual place.
The name Tanah Lot comes from two Balinese words: Tanah, meaning “land” or “earth,” and Lot, which is traditionally understood as “sea.” So, Tanah Lot can be interpreted as “Land in the Sea.”
The temple is located on a rocky island just off the coast of Tabanan, in western Bali. During high tide, the rock appears to be completely surrounded by the ocean. During low tide, visitors can walk across the beach area toward the temple.
🙏 The Story of Dang Hyang Nirartha
According to Balinese Hindu tradition, the history of Tanah Lot is closely connected with a holy priest named Dang Hyang Nirartha, who travelled to Bali around the 15th century.
It is believed that when Nirartha arrived in this area, he saw a beautiful spiritual light coming from the coast. He followed the light and discovered this special rocky location.
Nirartha felt that this was a very sacred place and decided to meditate here.
However, the local village leader, known as Bendesa Beraban, became concerned because many villagers were attracted to Nirartha’s spiritual teachings.
According to the traditional legend, Nirartha used his spiritual power to move the rock where he was meditating toward the sea. This place eventually became known as Tanah Lot.
The story is part of Bali’s rich oral tradition and is an important part of the spiritual history of the temple.
🐍 The Sacred Sea Snakes
One of the most interesting things about Tanah Lot is the sacred sea snakes that are believed to live around the temple.
According to local tradition, these snakes are considered spiritual guardians of Tanah Lot.
The story says that Nirartha created the snakes from his sacred sash to protect the temple from negative forces.
The snakes are usually found in the caves underneath the rock. They are traditionally regarded as sacred animals, so visitors should treat them with respect and should never try to touch or disturb them.
🛕 The Temple
Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s important sea temples.
Balinese Hinduism has a strong connection with nature, and the ocean, mountains, rivers, forests and other natural elements can have important spiritual meanings.
The location of Tanah Lot is therefore very significant. The temple stands between the land and the sea, creating a powerful symbol of the relationship between people, nature and the divine.

Tanah Lot is especially famous for its sunset.
When the sun begins to go down behind the temple, the silhouette of the temple against the ocean creates one of the most beautiful views in Bali.
