Marapi Volcano Erupts, 23 Climbers Found Dead

Marapi is a complex volcano in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Its name means Mountain of Fire, and it is the most active volcano in Sumatra. Its elevation is 2,885 meters.
Mount Marapi has had Alert status or level II since 2011. Mount Merapi's eruptive activity increased on January 7 2023, so the authorities temporarily closed the climbing route. However, the West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) reopened the climbing route to Marapi on July 24 2023 even though it is still on Alert status.
Head of the Marapi Volcano Observation Post, Ahmad Rifandi, has explained about the eruption of Mount Marapi which is said to have occurred suddenly. The trigger for the eruption is a very shallow pressure accumulation. "Because a significant increase in the VA earthquake (Volcanic Earthquake) was not detected and the second tiltmeter that reacted was the peak tiltmeter," Ahmad explained. "So from the tiltmeter there is an increase in pressure at shallow depths, but we cannot determine the trigger for the release of pressure because there is no indication from the earthquake data," he added.
The search and evacuation process for climbers affected by the eruption of Mount Marapi continues to be carried out by the joint SAR team. Now, the death toll is recorded at 23 people. The Task Force Team and Nagari Disaster Management Task Force (PB) Tanah Datar Regency have joined other teams to search and evacuate victims. Disaster observer from the National Development University (UPN) Veteran Yogyakarta, Eko Teguh Paripurna, said that the death toll could have been prevented if the recommendation not to approach the crater within a radius of three kilometers had been adhered to.

BROMO NATIONAL PARK IS CLOSED DURING "NYEPI" OR SILENT DAY.

Indonesia is a multicultural country that has at least 6 religions. One of them is Hindu. On Wednesday, 22 March 2023, Hindus celebrate their new year according to the Saka calendar. They called it ‘Nyepi’ or “Silent Day”. ‘Nyepi’ itself can be interpreted as a day of purification of humans and nature. Through ‘Nyepi’, Hindus hold a series of traditional ceremonies. During ‘Nyepi’, Hindus people try to hold back their desire not to leave the house, work, turn on the fireplace, internet or say certain sentences. This self-control is carried out by Catur Brata Penyepian. That way Hindus can be solemn when evaluating themselves, meditating, and shamadi in silence. There are several areas where the majority of the population is Hindu, such as Bali, Sulawesi (Central, South and Southeast), Central Kalimantan, South Sumatra (Lampung), and Bromo.
Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, which is one of the leading tourist destinations in East Java, is completely closed for tourism activities during ‘Nyepi’ day. It’s because majority of Tengger people in Bromo is Hindu. Head of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center Hendro Widjanarko said the closure was to honor Nyepi Day for Hindus, so that worship on ‘Nyepi’ day would be solemn and solemn. This is because during ‘Nyepi’, all Tengger Hindus must stop all activities. "Mount Bromo tourism activities will be completely closed from March 22 at 06.00 WIB to March 23 2023 at 06.00 WIB," said Hendro. The policy for closing the Mount Bromo area from tourism activities is contained in Announcement Number: PG.01/T.8/BIDTEK/BIDTEK.1/KSA/3/2023 concerning the Closing of Bromo Tourism Activities on Nyepi Day 2023 dated 10 March 2023.

* During Nyepi day, the access to Bali and from Bali is also closed. Avoid this date if you want to visit Bromo and Bali.

BREAKING NEWS: IJEN’S VOLCANIC ACTIVITY INCREASE, BLUE FIRE IS NOT ACCESSIBLE

On January 5, 2023, inspection of the crater showed that the water temperature of the crater lake had risen to 45.6 degrees Celsius. The water color of the crater lake is light green, thick white solfatara smoke, weak to moderate pressure, and strong smell of sulfur gas.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) recommends people living around Mount Ijen, East Java, not to approach Ijen Crater within a radius of 1.5 kilometers from the crater rim. The recommendation came as the activity of Mount Ijen increased from level I or normal to level II or alert.

Ijen Crater Nature Tourism Park is still open and can be visited as well for tourism. However, since the alert status was set, climbing activity can only be accessed starting at 04.00 AM from previously at 02.00 AM. The hiking is only until the caldera, means that visitors can’t go down to the bottom of the crater to see the blue fire. Gas mask during hiking is required.

The potential hazard that can arise from volcanic activity at Mount Ijen at this time is high concentrations of volcanic gasses around the crater from solfatar activity on the walls of the Ijen crater and also the diffusion of volcanic gasses inside the crater to the surface; and phreatic eruptions in the form of gas bursts from crater lakes.

Phreatic eruptions occur without being preceded by an increase in both visual and seismic activity. Several incidents of increased activity of the Ijen Crater are often followed by gas outburst events or bursts of gas from the Ijen Crater lake. The gas that spurts out is mainly carbon dioxide.
If you smell sulfur or sulfur gas that stings, the Geological Agency also asks the public to wear masks covering their breathing apparatus. For the short term or emergency, people can use a wet cloth as a cover for breathing apparatus, both nose and mouth.
