According to the report, the global population of green turtles has risen by 28% since the 1970s, thanks to decades of coordinated conservation efforts worldwide, despite continuing threats to their habitats.

Roderic Mast, Co-Chair of the IUCN Marine Turtle Specialist Group, said the species’ recovery proves what long-term global cooperation can achieve. He emphasized that protecting habitats and keeping oceans healthy is vital not only for turtles but for humanity as well.

🌋 Mount Lokon Review (Tomohon, North Sulawesi)Location & Distance from Manado:Mount Lokon is located near Tomohon City, about 20–25 km south of Manado, which takes roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour by car. The most common starting point for the hike is Kinilow Village, where local guides are available.⸻🏞️ OverviewMount Lokon stands at 1,580 meters above sea level and is one of the active volcanoes in North Sulawesi. It’s part of the Lokon–Empung volcanic complex. The Tompaluan Crater, located between Lokon and Empung, is the main attraction — it’s still active and emits steam and sulfur gases.⸻🥾 Hiking DetailsThe hike to Tompaluan Crater takes around 2–3 hours (round trip) depending on your pace. The trail starts through farmland and forest, then continues across lava rocks and volcanic terrain. The path can be slippery, especially after rain, so proper footwear is essential. Most hikers stop at the crater viewpoint rather than going all the way to the summit, as the top is steeper and covered with tall grass.⸻🌅 What to Expect • Panoramic views: From the crater ridge or summit, you can see Tomohon City, Lake Tondano, Manado Bay, and surrounding mountains. • Cool mountain air and lush landscapes make it a refreshing escape from the city. • Because it’s so close to Manado, it’s ideal for a half-day or full-day trip.⸻⚠️ Things to Know • Lokon is an active volcano, so check the volcanic alert status before hiking. If the alert is raised, access may be restricted. • The trail can be slippery and muddy, especially in the rainy season. • The upper section can be hard to navigate due to tall grass and less-defined paths. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended.⸻💡 Tips for Hikers • Start early in the morning to enjoy clear weather and possibly a sunrise view. • Bring water, snacks, and rain gear. • Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. • Always check volcanic activity and weather conditions before going. • Consider a local guide for safety and navigation.⸻✅ SummaryMount Lokon is a great day hike for those based in Manado or Tomohon. It offers a rewarding volcanic landscape, spectacular views, and a touch of adventure without requiring a multi-day trek.As long as you’re mindful of weather and volcanic activity, hiking Lokon can be one of the most memorable nature experiences in North Sulawesi.
