I booked my jungle tour in Bukit Lawang through Ipul and I can only say: highly recommended. I've been traveling through various countries for about 1.5 years and have done quite a few jungle and nature tours, but this one was by far my best.
Ipul, the owner of the accommodation and organizer of the tour, is a fantastic host. His place in Bukit Lawang only opened a year ago, but everything was super clean, cozy, and very relaxed. You can immediately tell that he really cares about his guests. I spontaneously extended my stay by a day, and Ipul simply offered me his bicycle free of charge so I could explore the area. He's also always available with tips and assistance. The laundry service was also excellent! Quick, clean, and hassle-free.
The actual jungle tour was a real highlight. We were even lucky enough to see an orangutan up close and also spot hornbill birds. That was an incredible experience.
Our guides, André and Yoyon, were truly fantastic. You could immediately tell that the jungle and its animals were very dear to them. They were very careful to ensure that nature was respected and also conveyed the message that we humans are merely guests here and that the animals should simply be left to be animals. They also always had fresh fruit with them, which we could eat during short breaks on our hikes, and it was just what we needed after some of the quite strenuous trails.
The accommodation in the jungle was exactly what I had imagined a true jungle experience to be. In the evenings, we sat together, ate, and had long, interesting conversations. It had a really lovely atmosphere.
The food was also a major highlight. The jungle cook, Barzan, cooked for several hours using simple jungle equipment, and I can honestly say it was by far the best Indonesian food I've ever had. There was a wide selection, all freshly prepared, and definitely more than enough for everyone. Fresh water was always boiled, and there was ginger tea, black tea, and coffee... All in all: If you're looking for a completely local jungle tour in a small group, where you'll truly learn values like respect for nature and animals, then this is exactly what you need. It was adventurous, at times quite strenuous, but that's precisely what makes it so special in the end.
Highly recommended!!
