From the womb, to birth, to marriage, and eventually to death, the Dayak people have their own sacred rituals that guide every stage of life. Each moment is marked with meaning, tradition, and deep respect for both the living and the unseen.
In the ritual of death, the elders carry an important responsibility. They prepare and offer the very best, not only for the family who are left behind, but also for the spirit of the one who has passed. Through prayers, offerings, and ceremonies, they ensure that the soul is honored and guided on its journey, while the family finds strength within their community.
Last year, we had the privilege of being in East Barito, a region where the majority of the people are from the Dayak Ma’anyan community. There, we witnessed how tradition is not just remembered, but truly lived.
Because for the Dayak, rituals are not merely ceremonies.
They are a way to honor life, death, and everything in between. 🌿
