Sianok Grand Canyon (Ngarai Sianok) in Bukittinggi, West Sumatera
Sianok Grand Canyon or Ngarai Sianok in Bukittinggi, West Sumatera is amazingly spectacular. Foreign tourists will definitely compare this beautiful valley with the Grand Canyon in Colorado.
Located in Mount Singgalang, this valley becomes an icon of tourism mainstay of West Sumatra Province. Sianok canyon is at the border town of Bukittinggi, District IV Koto, Agam regency, West Sumatra. Magnificent stretch of steep valley extending up to 15 kilometers. Width a depth of 200 meters to 100 meters cliff.
This valley called Canyon Sianok because flowed “Trunk Sianok” which means crystal clear river. Sianok rod can now be forded by using the canoe and kayak operated by a water sports organization “Qurays”. The route taken is from Lambah village to Sitingkai Batang Palupuh village for approximately 3,5 jam.
Sianok canyon elongating and meandering as a town border from south of Canyon Koto Gadang reaches the Canyon Sianok Six Tribe, and ends in Palupuh, is a part of the fault which divides the two island of Sumatra.
Well known as a Semangko fault (shaped like a watermelon cut open) is to form a steep wall, even upright vertical and form a green valley – a result of decreased movement of earth crust (sinklinal) – which flowed a crystal clear river named Sianok Rod. In the Dutch colonial era, this gap also called buffalo sanget, because of the many free-living wild buffaloes in the bottom of the canyon.
