Happy 81th Independence Day, Indonesia 🇮🇩

Indonesia is home to more than 1,300 ethnic groups, each with its own traditions, languages, stories, and ways of life.

In the remote forests and rivers of Southwest Papua, the Asmat people have a rich cultural heritage deeply connected to their land, rivers, ancestors, and remarkable woodcarving traditions.

Today, we celebrate the people and cultures that make Indonesia so wonderfully diverse — from Asmat and beyond. 🇮🇩❤️

Ijen Crater Sunrise Trekking

Home to more than 100 volcanoes, Java is one of the most geologically fascinating islands in the world. From smoking craters and emerald highlands to dramatic sunrises above the clouds, the island offers some of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanic landscapes.

Among them, Ijen Crater stands out as one of East Java’s must-visit destinations. Famous for its spectacular sunrise, the world’s largest acidic turquoise crater lake, and rugged volcanic scenery, Ijen rewards early risers with views unlike anywhere else.

But Ijen is more than just breathtaking landscapes.

The crater is also home to the sulfur miners who have worked here for generations. Every day, they descend into the crater and carry baskets weighing up to 70–90 kg of sulfur up the steep mountainside—often making the journey several times a day. Their resilience and determination are an integral part of Ijen’s story and deserve the same admiration as the scenery itself.

Planning your trek?
🥾 Moderate hike (around 1.5–2 hours uphill)
🌅 Sunrise departure for the best views
💙 Witness the world’s largest acidic crater lake
🧥 Bring warm layers—it can be chilly before dawn
🥾 Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip

Would you add Ijen Crater to your Indonesia itinerary?

Happy World Ocean Day 2026!

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic nation with over 17,000 islands—about 70% of its territory is ocean. Our lives are deeply connected to the sea.

The ocean gives us oxygen, regulates our climate, and supports millions of species, but it’s under threat from pollution, overfishing, and climate change.

Small actions matter: reduce plastic use, choose sustainable seafood, and protect marine life. 💙

Healthy oceans = a healthy Earth.

As the sacred day of Vesak on 31 May approaches, we look upon Borobudur, one of the largest Buddhist monuments in the world.

Did you know that Central Java was once one of the great centers of Buddhism in Southeast Asia during the 8th and 9th centuries?

Built during the Syailendra Dynasty, Borobudur holds more than 2,600 relief panels; one of the world’s largest collections of Buddhist carvings. The reliefs tell stories of Buddhist teachings, daily life in ancient Java, nature, trade, and the journey toward enlightenment.

Designed as a spiritual path, visitors walk through the temple levels clockwise, symbolizing the journey from worldly desires to wisdom. Every stone was carved by hand more than a thousand years ago, reflecting the remarkable artistry and culture of ancient Java.

In Sasak Sade Village, Lombok, weaving is an essential role of women, passed down from mother to daughter for generations.

Using natural dyes and traditional handlooms made of wood and bamboo, each textile is carefully woven by hand, preserving both craft and culture.

More than a skill, it is a symbol of identity, heritage, and pride.

Today, we honor the life of an extraordinary woman,
Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas.

A pioneer, a protector, and a voice for those who could not speak.

She devoted her life to the forests of Indonesia, standing alongside orangutans and fighting tirelessly for their survival.

As the founder of Camp Leakey and Orangutan Foundation International , she created a sanctuary of hope, a place where orangutans could be protected, rehabilitated, and given a second chance at life.

Rest in peace, Dr. Galdikas!
Thank you for your courage, your compassion, and your unwavering love for orangutans 🦧 🌳🍃
