Peresean: A Traditional Martial Art of Lombok
Peresean is one of the oldest and most iconic cultural traditions of Lombok, Indonesia. Passed down through generations, this traditional martial art has been practiced by the Sasak people for centuries as a symbol of bravery, honor, and community spirit.
In a Peresean match, two male fighters, known as Pepadu, engage in a friendly duel using rattan sticks (penjalin) and buffalo-hide shields (ende). Accompanied by traditional music, the fighters demonstrate courage, skill, and sportsmanship while following customary rules and respecting one another.
Historically, Peresean was performed to train warriors, settle disputes peacefully, and strengthen social bonds within the community. It was also traditionally held during periods of drought, as local people believed the event could help bring rain and prosperity to the land.

Today during our Tetebatu walking tour, a tourist from Germany experienced something new. While walking through the beautiful green rice fields, he found a snail in the mud for the first time!
For locals it’s normal, but for him it was a funny and surprising moment. This is the beauty of exploring local life in Lombok. 🌾
