After Idul Fitri long holiday season, we welcomed friends from the .facultyoftourism who were on a study tour to Semarang.

For three days and two nights, we introduced them to the interesting places in Semarang and its surroundings. Starting from Kotalama, Willem Fort Ambarawa which had just been restored, Ambarawa Railway Museum, Gua Maria Kerep, Sam Poo Kong, to Dharma Boutique Roastery.

Besides sightseeing and culinary delights, together we also revisited the history and multiculturalism present in Semarang and its vicinity!

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to for choosing our services for their field study tour in Borobudur and Yogyakarta. So much fun was had! From pottery making in Karanganyar Village to Ello River rafting, from iconic destinations like the Sultanate Palace and Prambanan Temple to niche activities such as visiting an artisan cheese maker and enjoying a fragrance workshop with at the cozy .

Just a few days after wrapping up our tour with Emile van Hutten, we had the honor of welcoming another special guest from the Netherlands: Janine Prins, an anthropologist from Leiden University. Her trip to Surabaya had a powerful purpose—tracing her family roots while documenting their historical legacy.

Like our previous tour, this one was also about connecting the past with the present, but on a shorter timeline. Our main goal was to visit and document 18 sites—buildings and plots of land that once belonged to Janine’s great-grandmother, Julia Henriette Jaarsma-Adolfs. And here’s the amazing part: Julia wasn’t just anyone—she was the first female lawyer in the Dutch East Indies. That piece of history added even more meaning to every stop we made.

We explored locations all over Surabaya, from the dense streets of Pesapen and the heritage-packed Kembang Jepun, to the leafy neighborhood of Darmokali. We also made our way through Jalan Kartini, Teuku Umar, Pandegiling, and more. But the biggest surprise? We discovered that Janine’s ancestor once owned the entire Dinoyo area—including a landmark building now known as "The Consulate."

The weather kept us on our toes—one moment it was pouring rain, the next it was blazing hot. But our spirits never wavered. There was something about this journey that kept pushing us forward, as if every site had its own story waiting to be told.

One of the most touching moments happened in Dinoyo. While exploring the area, we met an elderly woman who actually knew Janine’s family. She had even worked for them back in the day. That unexpected meeting brought a rush of emotion—it was like the past and present came together in one heartfelt hug.

By the end of the trip, we were filled with happiness and gratitude. There’s something deeply satisfying about helping someone piece together their family history—especially in a city like Surabaya, where every corner holds a story. We’re truly honored to be a small part of that journey of rediscovery.

This trip felt different from the usual ones. It wasn’t just about visiting historical spots—it was more like a journey through time. We were tracing the footsteps of someone's ancestors, walking through places that were once part of their lives. From finding old graves to exploring former homes and workplaces, it was a meaningful and emotional experience.

At Bersukaria, we love creating tours like this—a special mission to help Dutch visitors reconnect with their family history in the former Dutch East Indies (Indonesia).

This time, we accompanied Emile van Hutten on his journey to trace his roots. We started in Surabaya, visiting SMKN 12 (a former colonial-era school), Peneleh Cemetery, Kembang Kuning War Cemetery, and the Darmo area. Then we headed to Gresik to explore Bandar Grissee, and the next day we moved on to Mojokerto to visit PG Sentanen Lor and the historic Trowulan site. From there, we continued to Batu to see the old Sanatorium (now RS Karsa Husada), and wrapped up the trip in Malang—stopping by City Hall, Toko Oen, the Kayutangan heritage district, a military compound, and Sukun Cemetery.

Along the way, we were met with such warmth. So many people helped us out, shared their stories, and even showed us buildings that are still standing today. It turned into an experience that was not only informative but also full of joy—a truly unforgettable memory.
